Even if the Democrats take back the House on Tuesday, it’s important that we understand that the propaganda machine of Fox News is having a devastating effect out there.
I canvassed all day Sunday in NY-2 for Liuba Gretchen Shirley in West Babylon and North Babylon on Long Island. The experience was simultaneously uplifting and depressing.
It was uplifting because when you canvass door to door you know you reach people that wouldn’t otherwise vote, who are then prompted to actually do it. It was depressing because even though we were knocking on the doors of 80% Democrats (20% NY “Unaffiliated” and a few Republicans who voted against Trump), I discovered that even among this group, many of our fellow citizens have been successfully brainwashed about this “dangerous” caravan.
Nonetheless, I urge you to consider showing up tomorrow or on Tuesday at the headquarters of a campaign in a swing district like Liuba’s (NY-2), the Jared Golden(D)/Poliquin district in Maine (ME-2), or the Delgado(D)/Faso district south of Albany (NY-19).
After having been a Bernie supporter, I canvassed on Election Day for Hillary in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 2016. Few were at home, but I got a few votes for Hillary out to the polling place.
It felt futile compared to my thrilling experience watching the droves of millenials flood the same polling place as a poll watcher for Obama in 2008.
But I was wrong. It turned out that Hillary carried New Hampshire in 2016 by only FOUR VOTES PER PRECINCT. You can actually play a role in history over the next two days.
They’ll be thrilled to see you, and you’ll make a difference in the most important election of our lives.
