“What does it profit a man to be able to eat at an integrated lunch counter if he doesn’t have enough money to buy a hamburger?“-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
One of labors strongest friends died the night he gave these remarks in solidarity with black and white sanitation workers on strike for a better life. Too often even liberals buy into the myth that justice for the working class somehow comes at the expense of justice for people of color. People of color ARE the majority of the working class of this country alongside the white guys like my grandfather who punched a timecard at a plant while holding a union card in the other hand. It’s the same fight and the same struggle, and we won’t win it until we work together and realize that the ‘Mexican or black or woman or queer taking our job’ is our brother or sister or friend getting screwed by the same boss.
