Nearly 70% of Americans support the protests and support the idea that police need to be held accountable for their actions. NASCAR is banning the flag of treason from its events which is akin to the Pope banning holy water at the Vatican. A BFD someone might say. Leading the fight are the real youth who are far from coddled and are a woke giant ready to slay the dragons my generation and yours failed to slay.
I’m so proud of Revere BLM, Revere Youth in Action, and RISE for their bold commitment to hold the Revere Against Racism rally.
The Globe has some great photos from the event. In under 48 hours the Suffolk County DA, Speaker DeLeo, Mayor Arrigo, Chief Guido, and my boss Dr. Kelley announced sweeping commitments to BLM and anti-racism. They responded directly to students I taught or coached, and I had nothing to do with their organizing efforts other than show up where and when they asked me to.
We still have a lot of work to do. Lots of blue lives matter or Trump flags and bumper stickers in the community, an all white city council and school committee representing an increasingly majority minority city, and admittedly a largely white staff at RPD, RFD, and yes the Revere Public Schools. I’m going to do the work of examining me own curriculum and making it more explicitly anti-racist and I hope to be a bridge between the students and the staff as we work together on uncomfortable conversations and difficult decisions. But the work has to happen. Black and brown lives and minds have to matter.

How in the world is banning the Confederate flag at Nascar like the Pope banning holy water? It seems like the latter is a much more integral part of how faith is practiced whereas the former does nothing to change how cars are raced.

I think James had something less literal in mind.
I understood his comment to mean that the Confederate flag, as a symbol, is as central to the NASCAR audience as holy water is to any Roman Catholic.

Or as Ma would say, a typical NASCAR race has more confederate flags than Carter has liver pills.
Christopher says
Is there are particular reason those flags are seen a lot at races? Is it just that racing happens to be popular in the South?
jconway says
This article goes into that history and why the 2015 attempt at a voluntary ban did not work. Hopefully it works this time.
