Like many Democrats, I detest the word “loser”. But who is winning in the fight against COVID-19?
I dearly wish the media and observers of the COVID situation would include European statistics in their posts. Always.
The problem is the usual American myopia, naval-gazing, ignorance about the world, and nationalism. THAT is what is killing us.
Even otherwise brilliant medical analysts on television and even some American pandemic and epidemiological experts fall victim to this.
It must stop.
No expert should ever ignore the European example. The EU example should mentioned in EVERY discussion. Every one.
THEY ARE WINNING. WE AMERICANS ARE LOSING.

Europe and the US have comparable land area (3.8M vs 3.9M square miles). Europe has about twice the population (at 740M vs 320M).
Data sources like the EU CDC (https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/geographical-distribution-2019-ncov-cases) report that Europe as a whole is comparable to the US as a whole (US vs Europe).
Cases: 4,290,263 vs 2,829,660
Deaths: 148,011 vs 202,663
The US has higher total cases, Europe has a higher total death count.
It is certainly valuable to compare Europe as whole to the US as a whole. It is not valuable to compare individual European nations like Germany, Italy, Sweden, or the UK to the US. The more reasonable comparison is between European nations and comparable states or regions in the US.
In my view, the dichotomy between fact-based and emotion-based is more relevant than between European and American.
