Senator Harris gave a brilliant speech yesterday asserting that a pluralistic patriotism is still possible in modern America. Her speech was grounded in the core values of this country, starting with her stirring defense of the Constitution against a reckless executive and culminating in her salute to the bravery of her own immigrant parents who took a chance on America. Rejecting the white nationalism of the far right and the iconoclasm of the far left, Harris revived the vital center that historian Arthur Schlesinger once called the fighting faith of the Democratic Party. It is now up to Biden and his eloquent running mate to lead the country out of this abyss and restore that fighting faith to our government.
