The response of the US certainly has been crazy. Also criminal, corrupt, and treasonous (in the colloquial sense of the world).
Donald Trump and his administration is using the crisis to advance its own private political and venal agenda and to advance the interests of Vladimir Putin.
I fear that if we are forced to wait until January of 2021 (or later), it will be too late for Joe Biden or anyone else to pick up the pieces.
The time to replace crazy with science is RIGHT NOW.

We are living in a pandemic hell, with no end in sight, because a lying, crooked, immoral, uncaring , incompetent, stupid, white supremacist, lazy slob is president, and he thinks the government exists to serve him instead of the American people. Walter Shaub
As nearly as I can tell, about half of America think he’s doing just fine.

As nice as it would be to keep his 2020 popular vote below 40% I doubt that will happen.

Numerous mainstream sources now report that Mr. Trump and his handlers no longer care about the popular vote. Those sources report that the current strategy is to game the system in a way that allows Mr. Trump to retain power.

Trump allows people to express their racism and bigotry in a way they haven’t been able to in quite a while and they really love him for that. It’s a shocking thing to realize people love their hatred more than they care about their own actual lives. Fran Lebowitz

Oh, he cares about the popular vote. Otherwise he’d leave well enough alone after 2016 rather than moan about the supposedly 3 million illegal votes cast for Hillary. I’m pretty sure even the Trump campaign would still prefer to actually win.

Neither Donald Trump nor his campaign have shown any willingness to do any of the things needed to win a greater share of the popular vote. He and the campaign have, over and over, insisted on doing the things that will cause his popular vote share to decline.
Like every three year old, he demonstrates no connection at all between what he wants and what he does.

I agree.
Here’s the rub. Various polls (cf: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1118047/2020-presidential-election-latest-polls-us/) put Donald Trump’s support at about 43% this month (August of 2020). According to fivethirtyeight (https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/president-general/national/), that figure is 42.1%.
