I have been confronted recently by vulgar, screaming, Trumpists while holding signs campaigning for Joe Biden / Kamala Harris in my hometown of Wakefield. Believing that arguing with someone who has lost his reason is like giving medicine to the dead, I have found a sure-fire way to quietly shut them up. I have no interest in arguing with them or listening to their racist rantings so I ask them to give a simple “yes” or “no” answer to the following question:
First, I show them the dog tag of my hero, brother and best friend, Lieutenant Peter Rich. KIA in Vietnam on September 15, 1968 at the age of 23. Peter posthumously received the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. I then ask them : “Was my brother a loser?”
They silently turn and walk away.
Well played. Putting a face in it helps. Many years ago while talking to my brother-in-law who is a “free market Republican” during the ACA debates, I asked him about those with pre-existing conditions and he recited some party line about risk pools and “not my problem”……he was and remains very close to my sons and I mentioned the fact that one son has a congenital condition from birth, just as I have; asthma. I asked him if he felt his nephew should be treated in the manner he just described. He took a very long pause and said, “No, I guess we need to find a better way”.
By the way, he did not vote for Trump, but still considers himself a Republican.
True. My new operating principle is : “All politics are personal.”
Thank you for quietly and peacefully presenting them with that simple question. You never know, you might just reach a small percentage of them.
Cher attacks the Coward-in-Chief : “I wish trump every moment of suffering he’s brought our country. Every moment of pain he’s caused our people & 4 every VET he’s called stupid or a loser may he never draw an easy breath, may their parents, siblings, spouses, children haunt his every worthless, empty cowardice breath.”
In my archives, I have a recording of Cher calling into CSPAN’s Washington Journal early in the days of our Iraq/Afghanistan/terrorist (word cuts both ways) wars. She had just visited Walter Reed and wounded vets.
Great respect for her for that. She seems to have always done the right thing in regards to vets.
PS: I have a cousin whose husband played lead guitar for her on at least one of her tours. Have to ask him about who she is up close and personal.
AND ONE DAY LIKE A MIRACLE HE’LL BE GONE
