Update: A spokesperson for DeLeo now denies that he is leaving for Northeastern. But you know how these trial balloons work. Maybe, could be. Supposedly Ron Mariano would be next in line, which sounds like more of the same if not worse. — Charley
This news may be only a few minutes old, but I just received an email from Act On Mass, which is advocating more transparency in the House, stating that Bob DeLeo is stepping down as Speaker and not seeking that post in the new General Court. Serving since 2009 he has held the job longer than anyone else ever has. There’s probably a trusted lieutenant waiting for the promotion, but it would be interesting to see if someone more progressive would seek the gavel.

Fascinating. I wonder what is unfolding.

Can someone explain why it sounds from press reports like this vote will take place before the next General Court convenes? Each new legislature elects their Speaker, right? I know the caucus of reps-elect sometimes nominate their candidate beforehand, but even then I’ve heard that Mariano wants the vote before new members are in place and that doesn’t sound right.
