As a media event, today was fine. As news, it was yet another nothing-burger.
When might we expect the Congress and the media to begin asking questions that nobody has yet dared verbalize, such as:
I’m weary of the voyeuristic release and relentless repetition of all the attack-day videos. I already know it was horrible. I watched it all in real-time as it happened — I grew up there, I know what security at the Capitol is supposed to look like whenever a crowd that size is anywhere nearby.
The cannon-fodder and redshirts in the crowd are a distraction.
It is the LEADERS that I’m interested in.
I’d much rather hear a recording of a January 4th voice call between Mark Meadows and Kevin McCarthy (to pick two figures arbitrarily) discussing how to get the rioters into the building then yet another body-cam clip. We saw a video of a state GOP representative coordinate with rioters in Oregon and open a secure door to give rioters access to the Oregon state house. How many analogous events happened with GOP representatives in the US Capitol?
I’m confident that the various intelligence agencies have voice recordings of pretty much every cellphone call made anywhere in or near Washington DC for years.
I wonder what it takes to get that data shared with an investigation, on the record, and informing a real investigation into the real attempted coup — a real attempted coup that, so far as I know, is still going on.
The Trumpists believe that they will take the House and Senate in 2022, that they will name Donald Trump Speaker, that they will impeach and remove Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and that they will elevate Mr. Trump to President so that he runs as an incumbent in 2024.
Of course that’s crazy talk. So is most of the rest of what today’s GOP has said and done since at least 2016..
These thugs may be crazy, but the sedition they plan is very real. I think the Democrats, the Congress, the White House, and the DoJ need to stop playing media games.
I think it’s time to enforce the rule of law.

Yes, of course. I don’t dispute that. I’m reminded of the reporter who sticks her microphone in front of the mother who has just watched her husband and three children die in a house fire and says “How do you feel right now?”
Anyone who isn’t already fully aware of the moral depravity of Trump’s fascists is not going to be moved even a tiny bit by events like yesterday’s testimony.
I think it’s time to stop wallowing in the very real pain of what happened on January 6 and start working to identify and punish those who created and orchestrated it.
There’s a difference between wallowing in pain and feeling the pain of those who defended our democracy on 1/6. I am not wallowing but I needed to feel their pain.

I’m tired of seeing stories about Nancy Pelosi calling people names (https://www.cnn.com/2021/07/28/politics/nancy-pelosi-kevin-mccarthy-mask-mandate/index.html). I enthusiastically agree with that characterization. It’s long past time she stop making such statements at a podium with the full colors of her office on display behind her. This is just more grandstanding.

Pelosi is brilliantly cleaving off the small anti-fascist conservative wing to establish a temporary alliance to preserve democracy.
Somerville Tom’s point on getting serious about legal accountability is well taken. He is right. Both the coup plotters as well as the coup executors must not be treated with kid gloves.
But it simply matters what prevailing version of history is ultimately written on this matter.
This is not some game, as some have suggested here. It is not only deadly serious, it us, ultimately the only thing that will really matter over time.
As Timothy Snyder said in an interview with Democracy Now after the coup attempt:
“…this, the January putsch, is the day in infamy which we have to get right for historical purposes. If this becomes a myth of victimhood, if this becomes, as Mr. Trump says, something we should treasure, then the country is in trouble. We need to get the facts right and the history right and the story right on this one.“

If most Pukes believe Antifa, BLM and lefty activists attacked the Capital on 1/6 then why do they oppose a Commission to investigate it?
The seditionists who now control the party formerly known as the GOP know full well that any objective investigation into the January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol will reveal their complicity and leadership in the on-going insurrection.
More specifically, and perhaps more importantly, they have learned from Donald Trump that flagrantly false and utterly scurrilous lies about the Democrats raise more money from their increasingly isolated and shrunken base than any issue- or fact-based campaign.
They therefore aggressively promote whichever lies their pollsters tell them will raise the most money from their base.
The rest of us, especially including the mainstream media, only compound the problem by repeating their lies as “news”. Such repetition only expands the penetration of those lies.
