Mr. Brown announced he has resigned as head of New England Law Boston as m mentioned an interest in “re-engaging in the political arena” and wants “to re-engaging in the political arena in support of candidates and causes who share my vision of re-building the Republican Party and moving our country beyond the partisan gridlock…”
He’s a New Hampshire resident, by the way.
Any early speculation? Maybe VP candidate in 2024?

VP candidate? In his dreams.
New Hampshire is welcome to him. There’s a reason some of us have always called it “the Yahoo State” — and we weren’t talking about an internet company.

NH has evolved quite a bit politically in the last generation. A healthy democracy requires at least two healthy parties and one definitely is not at the moment. If Scott Brown wants to rebuild his party I say more power to him – doesn’t mean I would vote for his candidates to be clear.

I’m reminded of a possibly apocryphal exchange between two Vermont residents related to me by a close family member who lives in Burlington.
Whenever I hear people telling me about how NH has evolved, it brings to mind people who live near and in Pittsburgh who, for the past fifty years (since I attended college there) have been saying: “Pittsburgh has changed. It’s not the Pittsburgh you remember.”
So long as the surname “Sununu” remains a force in New Hampshire governance, nothing fundamental has changed.
Christopher says
I would argue that the Sununu name is what keeps the Republicans relevant in NH, which has otherwise become a mostly blue state, especially federally. It has an entirely Dem Congressional delegation and since I worked for the state party there in 2002 Dems have sometimes held state legislative majorities which they rarely did previously. Not as solid and consistent as MA maybe, but the change has been quite marked.
SomervilleTom says
Nobody who self-identifies with today’s GOP should remain “relevant” anywhere. Mr. Sununu seems to be just as vicious, cruel, ignorant, deceitful as any of his ancestors.
Mr. Sununu has Donald Trump’s recent encouragement (https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/565051-trump-says-hed-like-to-see-chris-sununu-challenge-hassan) to challenge Ms. Hassan in her upcoming Senate race.
Nostalgia for what our political system used to be is dangerous today.
Christopher says
Yes, Sununu is Trumpier than I’d like. I was just pointing out that his name means something in a state that is otherwise mostly trending blue. Our political system used to have two healthy parties. I think nostalgia for that is appropriate and necessary.

I’m not so sure about that. He’s a good looking guy and Nikki Haley might be tempted…..Sure, he’s an empty suit, a fraud, a con man who will do whatever the money men tell him…..which is a fine resume for a Republican.

Oh, make no mistake about my comment — I agree that he might well become a VP candidate. This is, after all, the party that gave us Sarah Palin a decade ago.
As you say, he has all the qualities that today’s GOP voter admires.
