Charlie’s friend: When did the GOP become the party of racists?
Charlie Brown: That happened in 1965 when Johnson signed the civil rights act and the voting rights act. That made the old southern white racist Dixiecrats mad so they left the Democratic party. They joined the GOP because they saw the Democrats as the party of the blacks and did not want to be in the N…er party. The southern white racist ministers were against the Democrats because they were in favor of the separation of church and state.
Charlie’s friend: So that is why the Republicans became the party of racism. Funny how much you can learn by studying a bit of history.

Correct. There has always been an agrarian conservative party and a progressive party in the US on the matter of race. They simply switched places gradually starting during FDR’s administration, and then very rapidly in the 15 years after 1965.
