House minority leader Kevin McCarthy was initially right to blame the defeated former president for instigating the 1/6 attempted coup in a floor speech by citing the father of the Republican party, Abraham Lincoln : “There is no grievance that is a fit object of redress by mob law.”

Even the Confederates did not try to overturn the results of Lincoln’s election. They tried to hinder it by not putting him on the ballot in many states, but they acknowledged his win was legitimate and said “nice knowin’ ya”
