President Biden invoked the Defense Production Act yesterday to boost production
of baby formula and launched Operation Fly Formula to use federal planes to fly formula in from abroad.
The Trump administration’s USMCA free trade agreement made it virtually impossible for the USA to import infant formula from Canada.
Trump administration, under pressure from the U.S. Export Dairy Council, then headed by current Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, included provisions in the United States‐Mexico‐Canada Agreement to restrict exports of formula from Canada.
Infant formula is subject to a 17.5% tariff, and we all remember how much Trump loved tariffs.
Mention this to any MAGA types and they will, of course, call it fake news.
…follow up. I just watched Fox News and according to the “Outnumbered” cast, this is all Biden’s fault for not addressing supply chain issues, and, get this, Too Many Regulations with an FDA that is filled with “Waste Fraud and Abuse”.
There was no mention of the trade agreement or tariffs approved by Trump nor any mention of the ongoing consolidation of American corporations that fly in the face of antitrust rules where we now have only four companies that manufacture baby formula in a nation with a population of almost 330 Million people.
There was no mention that there are only nine FDA inspectors that are assigned to the plants in the USA, Mexico, and Europe.
The sad reality is that if one is a FOX News viewer, one is as informed about the world as if one were a citizen in rural Russia.
Today’s GOP isn’t “pro” anything. They’ve paralyzed congress.
The fact that anybody votes for any of these deplorable thugs is shameful.
I’m afraid that there are those who vote for these thugs for the same reason there are Russians who support Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Both are convinced of a reality that is not even remotely true. What’s shameful is that the Russians have little choice of what media they tune into while the Americans do.

I realize there are those for whom this is not an option, but I’m really surprised I have heard nobody publicly suggest that for now mothers who can breastfeed do so, including pumping if the only reason not to breastfeed is physical separation. That would save formula for those who really need it.
While is it possible to hold down a full time job and still breastfeed ones infant, it is not easy for the mother or child. Our society places great importance on careers, jobs, and GDP. Natural breastfeeding is an obstacle to all of these and so, we rely on artificial means to raise infants.
If we were a nation that was truly “pro life” and “pro child”, we would have, at minimum, a one year maternity leave as common practice.
I agree, but that’s also why I made sure to mention the pumping option.
Imagine if Abbott used Trump’s Corporate Tax Break to update the Sturgis plant instead of stock buybacks to enrich shareholders.
