You have probably heard by now that an absolute force of nature, Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom, etc. passed away earlier today following a record-breaking 70 years on the throne. She presided over a transition from empire to commonwealth and witnessed a sea change in attitudes, opportunities, and technological advances. She also weathered personal and public trials, never wavering from her early commitment of her “whole life, whether it be long or short” to public service. While not outwardly political, she was nevertheless politically astute and I strongly suspect more than once strongly suggested something to her Prime Minister then figured out how to make the PM believe it was his/her idea. Just two days ago she confirmed the appointment of Liz Truss. I haven’t heard reporting to this effect, but at least previously I believe Parliament automatically was dissolved upon the death of a Sovereign. President Biden has ordered US flags to half staff on federal property until her funeral. Charles III is now King and other titles are being shuffled accordingly. Sic transit gloria mundi.
