Geopolitics of Fusion

December 13, 2022 By terrymcginty

Fusion is clean and safe. If there’s an accident, it shuts itself off according to American theoretical physicist Michio Kaku.

In the long run, in a few decades, the dictatorial regimes of the Saudis, the emirates, and the Russians are headed to dead ends.

EVERY un-designed, un-built, and un-tested technology is “clean and safe”.

The very first primitive fusion-driven power plants are decades away. Today’s hype about fusion is strikingly reminiscent of the hype about “Atomic Power” of the early 1950s.

It is irresponsible to make claims like “If there’s an accident, it shuts itself off” — there is absolutely no basis for that assertion. The various approaches to commercial fusion power require rare materials (enough that some sources say it will be mined from the moon), complex and dangerous containment technologies, and fundamental theory that is still unknown.

Just because a fusion reactor is unlikely to blow up like a fusion bomb does NOT mean that fusion power is “clean and safe”.

Whatever happens to the dictatorial regimes of the Saudis, the emirates, the Russians, and — yes — America will happen decades before commercial fusion is more than science fiction.
