In the midst of the casino brouhaha, there are still elections going on!

September 20, 2007 By David

You’d hardly know it from reading the papers or even the blogs, but there’s still a special election next Tuesday in East Boston: the 1st Suffolk state rep seat, recently vacated by now-Senator Anthony Petruccelli.

We’ve endorsed Gloribell Mota in that race, and we hope she wins.  Bernstein’s got a piece up on her in this week’s Phoenix, which is worth a read.

One of Bernstein’s points is that a quick cash infusion might help Mota out.  So let’s see if we can pull that off.  Here’s Mota’s donation page.  I’ve just chipped in a starter contribution, and I will match the next $100 from BMG readers.  As usual, let me know either in the comments or via email how much you put in.

Incidentally, my Spanish is rusty, but I wonder whether Bernstein’s is rustier.  Shouldn’t it be “Vota para mi”?  (Rather than “voto”?)

JFK claiming that he was a jelly doughnut in Berlin đŸ˜‰

      Remember this?

But this month, Romney scratched when he tried to wade through the cauldron of Cuban-American politics during a speech to South Florida Republicans.

“Hugo Chavez has tried to steal an inspiring phrase – ‘Patria o muerte, venceremos.'” Romney said, referring to the Venezuelan president and persistent U.S. critic. “It does not belong to him. It belongs to a free Cuba.”

In truth, the phrase does not belong to free Cubans. It has been the trademark speechmaking sign-off of their most despised opponent, Fidel Castro. And unlike Romney, Castro would switch to English to declare, “Fatherland or death, we shall overcome.”

The mistake pointed up Romney’s newness to the scene and the freshness of some of his positions.

As for the jelly donut, that wasn’t JFK in Berlin.  It was Larry Craig in Minneapolis.

This is crazy.  Why are we backing Mota when she has no chance in this election?

We really should back Dem-For-Healey Carlo Basile, right?  You've said your piece on this, paulas. Anything else to add?

I will say it again next Tuesday when ALL 6 of my family members vote for Carlo.  You have no voice next Tuesday because you are an outsider, just like the majority of Mota and Drago supporters.
