Congratulations to the winners! Previous updates have been moved to after the flip.
Here’s the city elections page. As of now, it’s looking like Sam Yoon is heading for an upset win over Michael Flaherty!
(What’s that? Oh – that’s only 0.33% of the votes? Right – never mind.)
UPDATE: With about 20% in, it’s Menino 46%, Flaherty 32%, Yoon 17%, McCrea 4%. That could well hold up … we’ll see shortly.
FURTHER UPDATE: The Globe has called the Mayor’s race for Menino and Flaherty. Meanwhile, it’s looking awfully good for John Connolly, Stephen Murphy, Felix Arroyo, and Ayanna Pressley, all of whom appear to be shoo-ins to finish in the top 8. The next four slots remain a bit up for grabs, though it seems likely that at least Andrew Kenneally and Tito Jackson will make it.
CITY COUNCIL UPDATE: With 90% in, it’s Connolly, Murphy, Arroyo, Pressley, Kenneally, Jackson, Bennett, and Tomas Gonzalez, who is barely squeaking past Ego Ezedi by a couple hundred votes.

Byrd over Greinke, KC leads Sox 5-0 in first ....
How many advance in the Councillor at large race?
8?
yes ..
interesting to see Republican Doug Bennett and Libertarian Sean Ryan in top 8 as of now ....
Bennett has been a door-knock machine
But he will fade and be a non-factor even if he makes the top 8 IMHO
about 150 votes between positions 8 and 11
with about one third of the precincts in, now Ezedi is in 8th
Voters Message in Boston District 9
Incumbent District 9 Councilor Mark Ciommo is coasting to a win with nearly 60% of the vote in a 4-way primary. There is a message from the voters in Ciommo's win - grassroots, on-the-ground experience trumps wealthy self-funders with self proclaimed progressive politics.
Are Pags and Alan K paying attention?
Can you fill us in?
I confess I wasn't aware of what was going on in the District 9 race.
Boston D 9
Incumbent City Councilor Mark Ciommo has taken heat for what is consider support anti-neighborhood support for development by Boston Colege. While being challenged by 3 others, Ciommo's main opponent was Alan Selvig, a first time candidate who has apparently self-funder his race (I don't have a link and am willing to be corrected)
To his credit, Selvig's campaign has posted on BMG:

Ciommo is a neighbor guy - not flashy. He has run the senior center in AB for a number of years. I view Selvig as similar to Pags or Alan in the US Senate race - no record on the ground (well that's not really fair for Alan K - his mark is grassroots organizing but he lacks the political activism sector of that movement).
Like Selvig, their campaigns are based on having the funding available to run, not the record. In my opinion, voters in AB cast their ballots for the guy with the boots on the ground for years - not the new political kids with $.
I don't know much about the race
but from what I do know -- and from the people I know working for Selvig -- your characterization is quite far from the mark.
Willing to be educated
offer me a comparison of Selvig and Ciommo with regard to AB experience.
Disclaimer -my union has endorsed and is working for Mark Ciommo.
Let me help out

With great effort, I started a boat importing business. Working long hours, listening to my clients, and making sound financial decisions, I gradually built up a solid enterprise with loyal customers. We became the top seller in the world, did business in eighteen countries, and supplied US and Canadian National and Olympic teams for over a decade.
The competitive nature of the private sector has reinforced my belief in unfailing integrity and honesty, and the importance of a great product. It has also taught me to be accessible and responsive to the needs of my clients. These principles will guide me as your City Councilor.

I was a national champion athlete, candidate for two Olympic teams, and served on the staff on three US National rowing teams. Honestly -I see a bit of a difference in experience and community involvement here. Selvig seems like a decent guy, hey he recycles, but like Pags and Alan K shouldn't there be something more there then having the money to run?
Ciommo Fundraising
Ciommo has his campaign finance report on his website:

I couldn't find Selvig's online. Your assistance would be appreciated.
$quot;like Pags and Alan K$quot;
As far as I'm aware, Alan Khazei is not self-funding his campaign. I don't think you get rich running City Year.
Point taken
but you also don't launch a statewide campaign without resources on a City Year paycheck. I don't think Mr. Khazei has been fundraising for this race for any significant time so money is coming from somewhere to fund his campaign kickoff.
In the end , he may not be a totally self-funded candidate. That remains to be seen. However, the lesson in District 9 stands. When challenging an incumbent it takes more then money if the incumbent has done his job. At this point, Coakley and Capuano are the closest to incumbents in the Senate race.
If I was overly broad in throwing the self-funder net on Mr. Khazei so be it. My main point was the D9 race and Mark Ciommo's 60% in a 4 way race.
Menino over 50% with an Almost 20,000 vote margin
impressive given the field and the fight. Hate to lose Sam Yoon from the Boston political landscape.
Ball game ...
Looks like Menino gets to 50+%, Flaherty about 2400 ahead of Yoon with one precinct left (less than 10 votes/precinct).
Tomas Gonzalez edges out Ego Ezedi for last Council slot -- 900 vote difference.
Congratulations to all who ran and put themselves before the voters. Congratulations to all who cared enough about these candidates to help them out. And congratulations to the voters who came out on this beautiful September day.
More about the fall campaign tomorrow ....
Congrats to the Next Mayor of Boston...
Tom Menino!
The opposition's totals combined are still less than the amount he received in terms of votes. One assumes a significant number of Yoon and McCrea supporters are going to stay home now that their first choice has been defeated. Similarly a decent number of them might favor Menino over Flaherty. So really that total is nebulous. Add on top of it the million Menino still has in the back and his army of patronage campaign workers and Flaherty's paltry $250k it looks like this race is over. Stick a fork in em he's done and Mumbles wins to fight another day.
