Things you should read:
- Scot Lehigh gives Kevin McCrea some love on today’s Globe’s op-ed page. McCrea is, to put it charitably, a long shot, but he’s a smart guy with interesting things to say about city government. You can hear our hour-long conversation with him at this link. The debate on August 26 — a week from today — should be fun to watch.
- Christy Mihos’s famous strategist Dick Morris doesn’t think that Charlie Baker “is going to be a serious problem” in the 2010 Republican primary, adding:
“I wonder how popular health insurance companies are,” Morris said. “Let’s put it this way: I’d rather run a hedge fund.”
Heh. Interesting tidbit from the article that I either didn’t know or had forgotten: Dick Morris ran Ed King’s successful primary run against Mike Dukakis.
- I like stories like this. I played a few chess tournaments in and around Boston when I was a kid. John Curdo was always there, and he often won. He was quite the presence. I’m glad he’s still at it.

How? It went something like this:
<
p>Voter/Reporter/starnger:”Mr. King, do have the time?”
<
p>Ed King: “Time? I’ll tell you what time it is. it’s time to bring back the death penalty, raise the drinking age, and cut taxes.”
<
p>”Change for a twenty?”
<
p>”Change? I’ll tell you about change. The change needed to bring back the death penalty, raise the drinking age, and cut taxes.”
<
p>You get the pic. Expect christy to find three things and repeat them over and over and over.

Raise your hand if you’re surprised the opera-singing lawyer played in chess tournaments as a kid…
<
p>Kidding. Kidding.
<
p>I just recently played three or four games of chess against a visiting relative, doubling the number of games I’ve played in my life. Since then I bought a set and got a book on the basics.
<
p>I’ve never been able to develop a taste for opera, but I am married to a lawyer! (shhh, don’t tell JohnD)

… I went to school for Music Theory and I never acquired the opera bug either. I like playing in the pit perfectly fine, of course.

The inclusion of a public option in health care reform is absolutely essential to ensuring that this change serves the people and not the insurance and pharmaceutical companies. The delivery of the country into the hands of the democratic party came with the responsibility to change the way Washington does business and the democratic party has much to lose if it appears to sell out the interests of the common good for big business and small victories. The majority of this country supports the public option and it is important that this majority becomes a visible entity.
<
p>In this spirit, I propose a Public Option Day with your support. I will be holding an event at the Massachusetts State House in Boston on September 2nd from noon-2pm and also encouraging those who cannot attend the event but support the inclusion of a public option to wear a unifying color (blue) to show our majority status. If you are in the Boston Area, please come out! And if you are elsewhere, make Public Option Day happen in your own city and we can become a unified voice. Please show us your support in this effort and we can win the reform that we and future generations require.
