This is going to be fun.The Westboro Baptist “Church” is a bona fide hate group, according to the Anti Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center. They're also quite small – basically this guy Fred Phelps and his large extended family rove around the country throwing absurd protests that no one supports.
They're coming to Brandeis on December 3.
…
Why?“remind these Jews that they bear the curse of their forefather's murder of Christ. Further these college students of doomed america live for the devil himself, spending their energies on drunkeness, lust, sloth and greed rather than serving the Lord Almighty.”
How are we going to respond?
I'm thinking, if these loonies are going to get me up at 8:45 in a morning for the inevitable counter-protest, it's going to be for something that doesn't just respond to them, but instead affirmatively builds something positive here. Something to make us feel more like a community.
I propose some sort of party.
What do you think?

in fine fashion when they were supposed to come to Newburyport Yankee Homecoming to protest the Laramie Project. Hundreds of mostly young people were ready for them in counter protest. They never came downtown.

You can’t protest their religion, as it will embolden them, or try to talk to them rationally. However, if you hyperfocus on how ugly all the WBC women are, via signs, chants, all kinds of stuff, it will get to them – bigtime. It doesn’t matter how much of a religious zealot a woman is, calling her ugly over and over again will enrage her. Then, you can take advantage of the situation and call all the men pussies because you’ve been calling their wives ugly dogs for 30 mins and they can’t do anything about it.

We’re so glad this story is being picked up by off-campus media! Last night, a group of over 100 Brandeis students gathered to begin planning a day of celebration for the Brandeis community on December 3rd. While the WBC’s decision to protest our community has obviously been a catalyst for our plans, we have decided that the most important thing that day is to celebrate who we are as a community, since the WBC seems to be against everything we are.

p>Our commitment to celebration can be found here: http://bit.ly/CelebrateBrandeis
<
p>In addition, we will be participating in a Phelps-A-Thon, raising money for Keshet for every minute the WBC protests at Brandeis. Keshet is a Boston-based Jewish GLBT group. Our Phelps-A-Thon page can be found here: http://www.phelps-a-thon.com/h…
<
p>Campus is buzzing with excitement as we prepare to turn the WBC’s hatred into a day of positive action celebrating our community!

JoeTS, I don’t know you, so I’m going to assume you mean well, but your suggestion is horribly misogynistic. You may not know this, but that “ugly” stuff is exactly the tactic the ultra-righties use against prominent Democratic or left-leaning women to depersonalize them–as if their only function is to look pleasing to men.
<
p>I’m no shrinking violet. I wish our side would play hardball more often. In this case, I’m all for ridicule; FSM knows there’s plenty there to ridicule (and the Pastafarians have done an admirable job at it, too). But please, no misogyny from our side; we have to deal with enough of it from the other guys. Thanks.

sometimes more, if you take to heart sarah palin and christine o’donnell. Given that, I would hardly call it a tactic of “utlra-righties”.
<
p>However, you are correct about the depersonalization – it’s what I’m going for. The men and women of the WBC are not people in my view. They will not be afforded the level of respect I give others who disagree with my opinions. They will be afforded the respect I would give a filthy cur digging in my trash can in the morning.
<
p>They represent an evil and mean spiritedness that is anomalous in even our polarized society. The UGLINESS of their women is not simply a physical one. They are ugly to the core of their being. They are ugly in their souls.
<
p>Look not into a mirror, men and women of the WBC, lest the eyes of the devil stare back at you.

Sarah Palin and Christine O’Donnell get ridiculed cuz they’re batshit crazy – just like most of their male counterparts (Sen. Inhofe, etc). It has NOTHING AT ALL to do with gender (other than I’m embarrassed for my gender because of them).
