Scot Lehigh’s Globe column this morning is exactly right about the Reilly/Conte kerfuffle. His bottom line: Reilly did a dumb thing that raised questions about his penchant for helping out his friends but didn’t impede any criminal investigation, and Kerry Healey is shamelessly exploiting it by raising questions that she knows to be unfounded. A couple of highlights:
Let’s put this as clearly as possible: There is simply no credible evidence or allegation that Reilly in any way tried to or did obstruct a criminal investigation…. Healey would know all that if she had bothered to call Conte’s office before making her claim. She didn’t. Instead, she offered a baseless charge against Reilly — a charge she now declines to defend, retract, or even discuss. And at this point, that’s what really raises questions here.
Read the whole thing – among other things, Lehigh’s summary of what actually happened is the best one I’ve seen so far.
I agree. Lehigh got it right. Reilly was protecting a victim’s family while Healy used the tragedy as poliitical motivation to criticize her opponent.
The problem is this is business as usual for DA John Conte. What is Reilly doing sending back channel messages to this guy?
There is a new blog on the race for DA in Worcester County. It is dedicated to replacing John Conte, who is overdue for retirement. The blog is at: http://conte2006.blogspot.com/
