A Boycott of the Bay State?

June 28, 2006 By petersp

I find this hilarious. I do not get filled with anger– this does absolutely nothing, except demonstrate again the nature part of US Politics.

As is mentioned by the Herald, it is ironic that that many of the Conservatives supporting this are in organizations that use Massachusetts images for symbolism. However, I find it far more ironic that they are boycotting us.

When this ‘boycott’ is compared to the Boycott of British Goods, predominantly by New England, because of British Taxes, one clearly sees how petty it is. Oh yes, fighting for freedom from people who are different is just as legitimate as fighting for freedom.

“They seem to keep re-electing traitors,” said Barbara Coe, president of the California Coalition for Immigration Reform

    <

This word ‘traitor’, I don’t think it means what conservatives think it means.  We see it all the time:  * immigration reform == traitorous activity  * questioning the Iraq War (lack of) strategy == aiding and abeting the enemy  * wondering why Wyoming, South Dakota, and Nebraska got so much money for anti-terrorism investments at the expense of NYC == why do you hate freedom  * defending free speech you don’t like == ACLU lovin’, flag burnin’ ‘Murica hater

I mean, it’s blatant “You’re a poopyhead” rhetoric, and it’s really jumped the shark.

I fully agree with that statement. But haven’t some liberals, such as bloggers, also done so? I mean, calling Bush “dictator” doesn’t exactly look polite either.

      <

      p>
Still, I believe that the fundamental ideology behind most Democrats is more positive (we are for X, Y, Z, and even W) as opposed to the negative definition of Conservatives (we are against Liberals, Commies, and Immigrants).

Are much more serious. Given how much they have pulled power to themselves ignoring all checks and balances. Signing statements, lack of judicial overview of secret spying programs, cheating at elections…

We are not a facist state, not yet. But today I was reflecting on the newest attack on the free press by fucking Republicans saying that the NYTimes is costing peoples’ lives (as opposed to say, a war that was illegal and unjustified and VERY BADLY RUN) and are traitors, and I realized once again we’re closer to a facist corporate state then we ever have been. Probably closer then in the Gilded Age (though I am no historian).

        <

        p>
MY GOD, today I heard the Bush administration spied on GAY RIGHTS GROUPS.

        <

        p>
I hope their tactics don’t work, because if they do, we WILL have a facist state. And that’s not rhetoric, that’s the truth of the direction these hyper-nationalistic democracy-haters are going. It’s what they want.

          Orwellian nightmare cannot be overstated.

Hell, the way Bush has been using the Constitution to wipe his derriere, I’d be surprised if we actually have an election in 2008. perhaps Bush will just declare that terrorism is such a threat that for the safety of the Empire, I mean the Republic, that we can’t risk an open election anymore.

          <

          p>
and when the NYTimes front pages that, I suppose they’ll be lablelled terrorists and anti-American.

          <

          p>
What do you call a recovering alcoholic who relies on fundamentalist ideology to guide his every move, with little regard for the consequences? Mr. President.

          <

          p>
I’d like to reiterate a point Lynne made. Bush sent us to war, and Bush has failed (at home and abroad.) Any attempt to pin this on the press is frightening. By God, I hope Arlen Specter succeeds in his attempt to hold Bush accountable for his frighteningly undemocratic actions.

Well, then the only recourse to bring back the tourist industry is to repeal the gas tax.  When tourists find out they can save $3 on a weeklong trip to Massachusetts, they’ll come back in droves!

Except that a Gas Tax can serve a highly useful purpose– encouraging alternative means of transportation. Massachusetts can certainly do better on that though. The T is… Imperfect.

I could repave all of the City’s forlorn streets. B/c I know how better to do it than any stupid, know-nothing government bureaucracy.

Government’s worthless, I’m perfect, hurray Kerry Healey! Thanks for the $3, Kerry 🙂

Sorry if my sarcasm was missed.  Apparently some of you haven’t been on the MassGOP site or listened to Buffy or Brad Jones lately.  Eliminating the gas tax is going to bring tourists into the Bay State, or so the argument goes.

I give this “boycott” about two weeks before the boycotters who aren’t foaming at the mouth get bored with it, forget about it, and/or move on to something else.
