Pols asked to bring Milena’s children to U.S.

July 18, 2006 By shillelaghlaw

Granted, any such online survey is not a true poll, as the respondents are self-selected. But I am still amazed at the sheer percentage of people who seem to be taking what I think is basically a mean-spirited position.

Is this a natural result of the anti-illegal immigrant drum-beating that the GOP and some Dems have been doing over the last several months? Or as a society, are we unwilling to make exceptions to the rules in extraordinary circumstances for compassion’s sake? (Or, is it because two of her three children are adults?)

(Just as an aside (and to be a bit crass), and forgetting momentarily, any warm-fuzzy-liberal feelings I might have, looking at this from a purely economic standpoint, giving these three individuals citizenship makes sense. They will likely be receiving a large judgment of money from someone as a result of this accident. Is it better that they spend it in Costa Rica, or Boston?)

Milena was a saint I guess because I hear nothing of the fact that she had abandoned her children to marry a man in the US.  Why should we bring her little rats into this country when she did not do it when she was alive?  Why are we responsible for them?  After all, it is quite evident that they soon will be little millionaires and will not need to go on the dole like so many of their countrymen who come here.  Let them stay where they are so that they can improve the local economy.
