Where are Healey’s Big Dogs?

October 24, 2006 By aaronusa

Deval Patrick has had appearances by President Clinton, Senator Obama, and other big-name Democrats. So where are the GOP big dogs when Healey needs them? In 2002, several big-name Republicans made the trip to Massachusetts for Romney, most notably Mayor Giuliani and President Bush. Where are these big GOP names now? I realize that Bush is just a tad less popular now than he was in 2002, but still, a visit from the sitting President couldn’t hurt. And how about Giuliani? He came to the North End for Romney twice in ’02, and recorded an ad for him. Has anyone heard much from him this election cycle? I know he’s made appearances in his native NY for the hopeless candidate the GOP has thrown up against Spitzie, why not come here? Am I alone on this, or does anyone think that a last minute Giuliani appearance might give Healey a little boost? What about Holbrook native Andy Card?

Holy crap, we better hope Andy Card doesn’t come up here for Healey. Whoooole new ballgame then, my friends. My man can flat-out bring it, old school.

You remember Vice President Dick Cheney? He came up to Boston for Kerry Healey. Somehow Kerry Healey made sure the photos disappeared.

“A visit from the sitting President couldn’t hurt”???? Have you been hiding under a ROCK??? I don’t know whether to laugh at the statement or pity your naivete.

    <

    p>
The sitting President’s NATIONAL approval rating is under 35% — it’s probably even lower here! Doncha remember that Cheney was here a few months ago to raise money for Healey — and the woman did everything she possible to avoid being seen with him!

    <

    p>
Bushie is spending whatever is left of his alleged political capital backing congressional candidates who have been caught either cheating on their wives (like Sherwood in PA) or trying to hide their old pictures of the Confederate flag (Allen in VA). The Republican Governors Committee stopped running their ads for Healey 3 weeks ago — because they don’t want to throw good money after bad. Why in creation do you think the POTUS disagrees with that assessment — especiallly when Romney has been so busy throwing her under the bus every chance he can?

    <

    p>
Clearly the national Republican consensus is growing:  stick a fork in her — she’s done.

Bush can bring Healey’s negatives up to his.

First of all, thanks Charley for being a giant turd. To the other people who commented: Yes, Cheney was here, but I mean a visible public event with a big name Republican who is not totally unpopular, which is why Giuliani came to mind. He did a few public appearances for Romney, why not Healey? Esp. when you consider that he is probably closer ideologically to Healey than to Romney.

Any Republican “who is not totally unpopular” is out trying to salvage Congress and races that truly matter to the big picture.

Propping up an empty-suit career cubicleologist who is down 25-points in a decidedly blue state is probably not the best use of John McCain’s or Rudy Giuliani’s time.

I think, in another universe, where Mitt Romney was not governor of Massachusetts, McCain and/or Guiliani would come here to Boston, mostly to get some coverage in a media market that includes New Hampshire.  They’re running for president and helpin Healey would help them raise their profile and collect chits in the Northeast.

      <

      p>
That said, since Mitt Romney is running for president, these guys both know that coming to Massachusetts to help bail out Healey is a fool’s errand.  If Healey wins, it makes Romney look good — his hand picked protege victorious in a blue state, etc etc.  Giuliani and McCain, on the other hand, do not have any interest in propping up a potential 2008 rival.

      <

      p>
And of course, these kind of big public events probably don’t move votes, but they can bring in tons of cash.  Healey, however, doesn’t really need the cash.  She’s loaded and Sean’s willing to spend as much as it takes.  No, she needs votes more than anything, and I’m not sure that connecting herself with the national GOP is the way to go to get them.

I disagree. It is not in McCain or Giuliani’s interest to show up here to help Romney’s Lt.

        <

        p>
At least one, possibly both, are going to run for President. They’re going to let Healey fail on her own under Romney’s watch. That allows them to point out that Romney couldn’t even get his own Lt. Gov elected, why should GOP’ers believe he can do anything differently nationwide?

I agree with you completely.  The only way it would make sense for McCain or Rudy to come here would be if Romney wasn’t running for Prez.

The NY Times has an article about the “certain class of Republicans who are somewhere between eager and willing to have them at their sides.”

There are those facing ethical questions or struggling to recover from gaffes. There are those desperate for the cash Mr. Bush can bring in just by showing up for lunch. There are those who need the president to turn out a demoralized base. And there are those who, like Vern Buchanan, the Republican candidate for the House here [Sarasota], are a little bit of all three.

So a little applicable, but not too much.

What national politician wants to be caught dead by someone who started the race down 39% and hasn’t really been close at any point during this race (13%, my friends, is not close). Politicians don’t like to be around losing politicians – they must think there are cooties or something =p
