Following on Hoyapaul’s painstaking and SSL’s pro-Tim analyses of last week’s election (welcome back, SSL!), we thought you might enjoy taking a look at the always interesting work of Robert David Sullivan over at MassINC. Sullivan, you’ll recall, has divided MA up not by county, but by rough communities of interest, including “Left Fields,” “Cranberry Country,” “Post Industria,” and seven other colorful names. His analysis of the election is called “Win-it-all Deval.” Heh. It’s well worth a read — and don’t miss the spiffy pop-up maps!

This stuff is great — I love it. It’s very interesting that the South Shore and the lower Cape — “Cranberry Country” was really the only competitve region this year. A good number of the few remaining Republicans in the legislature are from this region.

I wonder if this is because this seems to be really the only region in MA with a substantial number of all-around conservatives (culturally/social and economically) that have no problem pulling the GOP lever. There are a number of areas (Quincy, Springfield area, etc.) with a concentration of cultural conservatives who nevertheless tend to vote Democrat because of economic issues, and the then economically conservative voters in the ‘burbs who are more liberal on “social issues” and are willing to vote for Democrats on the basis of those issues.

The MassINC maps really break this sort of thing down really well.
