What I’m thankful for (with photos)

November 23, 2006 By Charley on the MTA

Teddy’s victory speech.

John Kerry — who encouraged Deval to run early on. Thanks, John.

Tim Murray, introduced by John Kerry. Don’t waste this guy’s talent, Deval.

The camera follows Deval as he walks down the corridor into the hall. He was looking down and walking slowly, savoring the moment but clearly humbled as well. I’ll remember that for a long time.

Does this make you feel thankful? What state has a better team?

We can exhale now. Enjoy this. It really happened.

That really was a special night for so many people.  Coming from the Worcester area, the overwhelming majority of activist Dems are plain vanilla white folks, so it was such a cool and wonderful thing to be surrounded on the floor by so many excited people who don’t look like me.  I felt like I’d stepped into my own undiscovered country once again, a feeling I had when I was in the Army in S. Carolina and Georgia almost twenty years ago.  As the opening strains of Heather Small’s song started, and we were treated to that backstage walk, alone, from the room (complete with advance copy of the Herald on the cheesy table) to the stage, I noticed the two black women standing next to me were, simply put, bawling.  I’ll never forget it.

…we do have a lot to be thankful for, not just in Massachusetts, but throughout the whole nation.

But the Patrick victory here was really special.  I’ve been involved in a lot of campaigns, but this one was different…it really was more of a movement than a campaign.  And that night, November 7th, was magical.  I, too, will never forget it.

    Thanks for the great photos!

Doubly so for me, I’ve waited 16 years for this, a Governor that not only is a Democrat, but also a man who fought and won so many of my freedoms in Washington.  He is so humble about it that most Dems I talk to are completely unaware that the ADA enforcement was part of his charge. Something that would change the lives of 56+ million people so profoundly, including our ability to go to the polls to vote on Nov. 7th.

I believe one of his greatest victories, (after being elected Gov.)  along with fighting to win us better access to the www.

So, as I said on election day, “What have you done today to make you feel proud?  I VOTED for Deval Patrick.”  And now I get to be an advocate under his Administration, to continue his mission of making EVERY citizen of the Commonwealth  EQUAL.

    Peace today and always –

For you non-Worcesterites, a great profile of Tim Murray by Scott Zoback can be found here.

With 10 days left until the primary, Murray is on his final push. He’s matching Jim McGovern, a champion stumper if there ever was one, step for step around the room, and may even be outpacing his mentor when it comes to the actual amount of conversation with the people. Murray’s not as savvy an orator as McGovern, nor as charismatic as Patrick – but he’s got the touch. People are impressed with his presence. He’ll pull a chair out to help a tired woman sit. Said one lady, “I like him and that Patrick.”

And suddenly it’s clear: Murray is very good at this.

Be sure to check out the photo (scroll down and look on the right) of Murray clowning around with a sleeping campaign aide.
