Catholic Citizenship Head Steps Down

January 31, 2007 By kai

I’m sure this news will make some happy.  Catholic Citizenship has announced that Larry Cirignano is stepping down to “head up a national organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. dealing with same-sex marriage and other public policy issues.”

A quick Google search didn’t pull up any news about where he is going, and I couldn’t find anything on their website either.  Anyone know where he is going?

commit a crime, get promoted (a la Cardinal Law). It’s “a yet-unnamed organization fighting nationally against same-sex marriage.”

This from a Massachusetts Family Institute e-mail:

Larry Cirignano, who served as executive director for the Boston-based Catholic Citizenship the last few years, has stepped down from that position to return to Washington , D.C. to lead a yet-unnamed organization fighting nationally against same-sex marriage. Cirignano was very successful in forging a relationship between his organization, which is led by former Vatican ambassador Ray Flynn, and the Boston Archdiocese.

Philip D. Moran, the president of the board of directors of Catholic Citizenship, referred to Cirignano’s “outstanding work in the area of grassroots organization” in a press statement about Cirignano’s departure. The large grassroots network he created across the Commonwealth was an invaluable tool in the fight to win the vote at the Constitutional Convention on Jan. 2. It was also under his leadership that 300 Catholic parishes worked to collect over half of the 120,000+ certified signatures necessary to bring the Marriage Amendment before the Legislature.

The public policy advocates that Cirignano recruited in the different areas of the state have been critical in getting activists to come into the State House for constitutional conventions, organizing regional rallies in support of the Marriage Amendment, and prompting citizen activists to write and call their legislators.

MFI would like to thank Larry Cirignano for his contributions to the cause of marriage in Massachusetts , and wish him all the best in his new endeavor. Please join us in praying for Catholic Citizenship as the organization searches for a new executive director.

The new group that Larry Cirignano is going to lead has not even been named yet, and I think that may have been done deliberately. My impression is that they are going to try to let his assault and battery charge get resolved before they name it, so that less negative attention will be put on this new group. That seems foolish considering Mr. Cirignano is not going to be able to lie his way out of facing the consequences of his actions, or the conviction that will follow his Feb. 20 court hearing.

This move stings of the days Cardinal Law was promoted to the Vatican to escape his evil acts. When is the church going to learn to stop shuffling wrong-doers around in an attempt to cover up the truth, rather than release them?

What kind of group would be taken seriously when it’s leader has this type of conviction? The answer is clear; with Larry Cirignano at the helm, purhaps they should name the group “Titanic”.

if the organization he is going to is Catholic or not.  Even if it is, it, like Catholic Citizenship, almost certainly is run by the laity, not by the institutional church.
