Mock Presidential Primary… with IRV!

February 23, 2007 By sk-jim

Even though it is still too gosh-darned early to be picking a Democratic presidential nominee, the New Haven Advocate is offering an opportunity to express your preference(s) using instant runoff voting.  Click here to cast your vote – results will be made public in mid-May.

Alternatively, I would encourage the good folks here at BMG to set up their own IRV poll.  It would be interesting to see who this community supports on a majority, not just plurality, basis.

One the biggest problems with our current “democracy” is that is it not very democratic.  In any race with more than one candidate, such as many Democratic Party primaries the winner is not the person with majority support, but with only a plurality of support.

Instant Run-off or rank choice voting should be the norm for all elections. BMG would do a great service to our entire process by conducting such a poll.  It would put into practice a much needed reform and educate those who may still not know about it how it works.

One would think this is preaching to the converted, but this may not be the case.
