Sure everyone is waiting for conventional wisdom to kick in and have Jeanne Shaheen take on Republican John Sununu for the New Hampshire Senate seat. But just ask Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter about conventional wisdom, especially in the primary. New Hampshire likes the outsider / new comer (the current Governor and the two members of Congress never served in elective office).
One probable Democratic candidate to challenge Sununu has one heck of a resume…former astronaut, physician, Major in the Air Force Reserves (retired), engineer and Dartmouth Professor. His name is Jay Buckey and I received a video email from his Exploratory Committee on Global Warming (so he apparently is net savvy also). Not only does he appear to be smart as hell, but he LOOKS and sounds like an incredible candidate.
This is a guy to keep an eye on.

I hope he can keep this up, but if he can I may have found the candidate I will work for in this cycle since none of the presidential candidates are exciting me.

He’s got quite a resume, and his work as a professor has made him a nice speaker.

In addition to his obvious global warming interests, he’s former NASA — and that program constantly gets the short end of the budgetary stick too.

Good stuff.

I was extremely impressed by that video. I think he made the point of “An Inconvenient Truth” but quicker and probably more accurately that Al Gore did. (perhaps a bias as scientist, but as a non-scientist Gore does slip in some misconception)

I was already impressed by his resume and seeeing his site before, but now I’m thinking I might just move in with my father-in-law next summer to help out this campaign.

So Buckey thinks we should do things to stop global warming. Great. But I’d like to know more.

Do we know anything ELSE about where this guy stands on the issues? I just went on to his website and it was pretty light. Where does he stand on other things (healthcare, gay rights, abortion, economy)? There are other people in the race against Sununu too. I’d like to hear more from all of them before getting on anyone’s bandwagon.

I’m sure we all want to see a Democratic Senator from NH elected in ’08, but I’d like him/her to be a real progressive – like Shea-Porter!

…have at least one interesting thing in common…they both jumped from being “active citizens” to being political activists during the Draft Clark / New Hampshire primary days, as the discussion over at WesPac points out. As time evolves, we’ll see if they have other things in common.

Sure it’s a little to early to jump on the band wagon of a campaign that is the exploratory phase…just as I think it’s a little to early to be critical to suggest his website is “pretty light”. It is after all exploratory and 17 months before the primary. But at the very least, his resume and his “presence’ in the video, indicates to me that people should keep an eye on him. But there is a lot more water that has to run under the bridge before we know what we have here.

about him and it seems several folk there knew him from 2003-4 and seem to really like him. Follow the tread over at there by following this link
