Good afternoon Blue Mass Group.
My name is Patrick McCabe and, as you learned last week, I am running against Paul Donato in the Democratic Primary next year for the 35th Middlesex District.
My decision to run for office is based on a wide range of concerns I have about the kind of representation the people of this Medford/Malden district deserve. When a legislator tells the many same-sex families and LGBT individuals that they are not entitled to the responsibilities and protections of marriage, that is a failure of leadership. When a legislator claims he believes the people have the right to vote on this amendment but then turns around to deny the people the right to vote on an amendment that would have made healthcare a right, that is hypocrisy.
Our system is a democracy, and elections are won by the majority. That is part of how our system works. But a vote which strips basic equality away from our friends, our families, and our neighbors is an affront to the values that are the foundation of our democracy. Liberty and justice for all is not easily achieved, but it should always be aggressively pursued.
I will be a representative who fights for the basic rights of individuals. I support equal marriage rights for all and I support a woman’s right to choose.
I will work to renew the campaign to make healthcare a right, increase funding for our schools (including our community and state colleges) to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to succeed, and I will work to close unfair corporate tax loopholes which restrict our ability to fund what ought to be our priorities.
I am the organizing director for SEIU local 1984 and everyday I help working individuals and families stand up to demand fair pay and benefits and workplace protections. I know the challenges that working families face and I know that, sometimes, government can be an ally of the people. But it takes leadership to make that a reality, and that is in short supply.
To win this race I need your help. I am having an organizational kickoff at the home of Mike Silvia on June 26th at 7:00pm. The address is 146 Forest St. in Medford. If you are able to make a contribution to this campaign, please do. Checks made out to the Committee to Elect Patrick McCabe can be sent to:

My web site is under construction and will be up in a few days so you can learn more about me and my candidacy, contribute, and get involved with the campaign.
I promise to do my part. I have over 15 months to knock on the doors across the district, and that work begins immediately. This campaign will be won by reaching out to the voters person by person and family by family. And by that, I mean ALL our families!
Please join us on the 26th. I look forward to your feedback and I am grateful for your help.

I appreciate you taking the time to write here, Patrick. Furthermore, I look forward to when the gay marriage debate is (hopefully) behind us after Thursday so that we can get to know more about your positions on other issues.

On reparations for gays either as a payment or tax credit. Let’s see Massachusetts be the first state to apologize for mistreatment of peoples based on gender discrimination and provide restitution for all the indignities suffered by gays over the centuries.

Be a real statesman!

talking seriously about this?

My suggestion is to focus on the issue at hand until it’s been favorably resolved.

can we get the guy hatched before we demand he cook for us?

An apology will suffice, as long as new policies are enacted to make sure the wrongs that have been done don’t happen again. Massachusetts seems to be on the right track, hopefully we can continue that track once these ConCons are behind us.

But I don’t need any reparations from the government.

and undertaking the challenge. Lots of kvetching goes on in places like this, but rarely are people willing to actually step up to the plate and take a swing.

Patrick, there are quite a few angry and hurt people in Medford this week — it’s a great opportunity to gather names and email addresses of potenttial supporters.
