From Marc Ambinder (HT Bernstein):
“Thank you AFSCME!”
That was how New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson closed his speech to the SEIU membership in Washington today.
Can things get any worse for this poor guy? It’s starting to border on the comical.

As Richardson is to presidential candidates, Gagne is to relief pitchers?

That was a truly painful thing to watch.

Richardson doesn’t have his mind at the same place and time his body is.

He brags about negotiating with Saddam Hussein, but his anecdote of that include his own gaffe of absentmindedly showing the Iraqi the sole of his shoe (crossing his leg in a sitting position). That’s a rude gesture in the Middle East, kind of like making the OK gesture in Brazil. He’s lucky it didn’t ruin the negotiations.

A President needs to have presence of mind. Richardson is not there yet.

Wow…that's quite a snafu. I understand he's busy and probably exhausted, but that's a critical error, campaign-wise.
I had high hopes for this guy. Especially since I think he is the only candidate that can beat the republicans next year.

I had high hopes also, but have seen nothing from the candidate himself to make me feel good about it. Whether it is lackluster debate performances or the continuting series of gaffes, you have to wonder what is going on here. Organizationally, the campaign seems to be getting it, as they have crept up in the polls, which makes it all the more frustrating.

He could have suggested to a bunch of Gold Star Mothers that “every day is Mother’s Day as far as you’re concerned”…
