House’s SCHIP override attempt fails

October 18, 2007 By David

Just watched it on C-Span.  The vote was 273-156.  A few votes switched (the vote to pass the bill was 265-159), but the House was still about a dozen votes short.

Disappointing, but not unexpected.  Look for a revised bill to contain modest, but not major, changes — just enough to bring along let’s say a dozen House members.  Bush will veto it again.  But this time there hopefully will be enough votes to override.

Congratulations to Rep. Niki Tsongas (D-Mass.) on being sworn in this morning and on casting her first vote for such a worthy cause!

one of the primary reasons given to vote for Tsongas was pretty much bull shit and that Ogo’s position of working with congress for a new bipartisan bill was the approach that this bill will have to go.

Great.  That means we are left with that a guy who will only be in office for a few more months won’t have an “ally” on the war in Iraq.  Seems like sound reasoning to me.

Thanks again for those useless ads Emily’s list.

defused the issue almost completely if he had just leveled with the people of MA-05 by saying what he would have done in today’s vote.  It was such a political no-brainer, and it would have ended our hilarious “Idon’tknowski” line of commentary.  If I were a Republican, I’d be awfully wary about engaging Dustin Olson or whoever Ogo’s chief strategist was.

      <

      p>
I mean, duh, obviously if the override fails a new bill has to come out of it.  But there will be virtually no changes made along the lines that Ogo said he wanted (the immigration thing), since no one else actually cares about that.  AFAIK, no one who voted “no” said they’d vote “yes” if the immigration thing were changed.  The “no” votes were all either about taxing tobacco (which is why even the Dems from NC were reluctant) or about “socialized medicine.”

The GOP Senate was willing to work on the bill, and the Dem Senate found compromise.

      <

      p>
The GOP House told the Dems that they’d vote “no”.  So, unwilling to work on the legislation, the GOP House was shut out once language was found in the Senate.

      <

      p>
Don’t forget, the SCHIP bill that passed was not what the Dems wanted — they compromised on the total cost, adult eligibility, public vs. private insurance for future enrollees, etc.

is that we voted for someone who told us how they would vote and did it.  Might not make much sense to you, but there is not much support out there for the 12 year old illegal immigrant who make $82,000, driving cars and having a social security card for health care.

I was joking.  I already conveyed my disgust for this whole special election.  This was a shot at the stupid Emily’s list ads that annoyed the hell out of me on WEEI not at Tsongas.

Solution, vote in more democrats.  If the Republicans can only muster 44 votes for one of the most successful health care initiatives is a long time, then we need some changes.  It was approved the gridlock was from Dubya and the rubber stamp morons.  Time to get them out.

And deliberately neglecting copyright restrictions is highly likely to get you booted from any public site because of the very real concern of lawsuits.

                  <

                  p>
Here is a link to the page for this picture on Flickr, which belongs to Kevin Smith aka notmyown2k3. The license for this picture is here and specifies that you are free to use the photo as long as you attribute it, which you have not done. So either you are Kevin Smith or you are violating his copyright.

                  October 19, 2007 at 12:33 pm

I note that Kevin Smith says he’s going to school in Syracuse and that his hometown is Atlantic City. That would give Mr. Smith exactly zero reason to care about Massachusetts politics, and thus I think we can conclude with reasonable certainty that School Zombie ’87 is not the copyright owner.

There is such a thing as a lame duck president.  That's a real phrase.  There is no such thing as a “lame duck congress”.
