National Anthem:
We have John Williams and the Boston Pops. (Game 1)
We have James Taylor for Game 2.
They have a some country-western singer.
Let's put these Denver ball games and their faux-Cleveland towels out of their misery. SWEEP!
Please share widely!

One break, and I see political ads for Mitt Romney, Barack Obama, and Deval Patrick. This must be what it’s like to live in New Hampshire.

For good luck: (as performed by Neil Diamond)
(as performed by some good Red Sox fans)

political ad for Deval Patrick. Because that’s what the taxpayer funded UMass ad felt like. Deval is quickly becoming the king of the, for lack of a better word, “franked” media buy. First it was the “pro-business” radio ads and now it is this ad for the UMass system.
<
p>
I am weary whenever any politician of any stripe features themselves in a taxpayer funded advertisement.
pablo says
I think it is jet fuel for minority kids in our schools. If Deval’s popularity also spikes as a result, so be it.

eaboclipper says
His initial reaction was that it was a Political Ad. I’m just agreeing with him.
bob-neer says
Get the names of politicians off our signs etc. Let’s start by making Washington National just that again and wiping the blemish of that regressive Reagan’s name off one of the most convenient airports in this country. No need to change the name of our capital, though: I think both EaBo and I will stop there.
eaboclipper says
see a difference between honoring a past politician with a public building and or town name, and creating an ad with taxpayers money featuring yourself?
<

But enough politics. 9 outs away from two in 4 years. The pride of Hyde Park, Manny Delcarmen on the mound. I’m glad to see that Terry is keeping a Youk substitution for the 8th and I would imagine a pinch hit for Delcarmen.
davidlarall says
I will always call it WASHINGTON NATIONAL. The only thing Reagan did for air transport was to fire all the air traffic controllers – real smart move there cowboy.
BTW, it looks like no more baseball in Boston this year. Is that a good thing?
eaboclipper says
Back in the late 80s early 90s. I went in 1990 for the Presidential Classroom for Young Americans. The old terminal felt more like a bus station than an airport. I distinctly remember there even being TVs you would put quarters in to watch.
davidlarall says
Yup, I remember the strange TV chairs. The new terminal is great – as long as you like walking. Most of my flying during that era was on NWA out of a “futuristic” gate area at the south end of the old terminal.

I got no problem with the governor pitching UMass. What I’m a bit skeptical of is Menino selling Reeboks.
peter-porcupine says
…if Romney or Cellucci had done that, you’d have had a cow. As it was, Romney didn’t even have his name plastered on public works projects (Cellucci ordered up all NEW signs when he took over from Weld).
<
p>
WHAT did the placement of that buy COST? DURING the Sox game? The ad per se is borderline, but the placement cost must have been HUGE. It’s like those dumb radio ads he runs morning drive time, with him inerviewing Mass. buiness owners as to why Mass. is Paradise. We’re HERE. At least AH-nold is advertising in another state!
shillelaghlaw says
C’mon Peter- are you saying that you can predict my behavior? In this instance, you’re off base. I’m glad that any governor is out there promoting my alma mater- I wouldn’t have objected to Celucci or Romney doing the same thing. (Maybe I would have cringed a bit…)
<
p>And as far as politicians in general plastering their names on buildings and public works projects, that’s been going on since before the Roman Republic. I wouldn’t criticize Romney or Celucci for doing something that I would have no problem doing if I was in their place.

Shill – if you don’t regret the use of tax dollars for wanton display, well, OK. As far as Mumbles goes, I’m pretty sure that ReeBok paid for that ad, not the City of Boston. Then again, anything’s possilbe…
shillelaghlaw says
I actually liked the “Rome” sign. Maybe because I’m predisposed towards big public works projects, I don’t mind that sort of thing! đŸ™‚
As for Menino, I never thought that the City paid for the ad. My apprehension about the ad is that there is a sitting elected official in an advertisement for a product. (That is what the ad is about; Reebok is merely paying tribute to our fair city in the hopes that we will think fondly of them when we buy our footwear.)

I think Spilborghs, Hawpe, Tulowitzski and Torrealba could be some avant-jazz quartet … or a Weimar-era architectural movement.

On a different note, did anybody else get the feeling that Joe Gibbs refused to shake Belichik’s hand after the game. I saw Bill looking around for Gibbs right after I saw Gibbs go off the field. Has any media mentioned this?
