As a Democratic Candidate for the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts running for the seat currently held by John Kerry, I was appalled by the Democrats failure to address a tax loophole
Washington Post
for some of the wealthiest people in America. This tax loophole for billionaires has been called the size of a Mack truck by David Sirota
It is a sad day in America when the only common ground that Republicans and Democrats have found is the bowing to powerful special interest lobbying. John Kerry skipped out of the Senate to start his vacation a day early on August 3rd and was AWOL on the important FISA vote which took a big chunk out of our Constitution. Again, it is the non vote that really defines the lack of leadership and absence of the courage of convictions. Should not the U.S. Senate have shortened its month long vacation while we are at War to take up a loophole that could pay for the health care of every low income child in America through the age of 12?
There certainly has been time to entertain such earth shattering issues such as an ad my MoveOn.

…but Congressmen don’t need to do the walking! It is a sad day when loopholes allow the moneyed-class to pay less than their fair share. I’m getting so desperate for tax fairness that I might even support a flat tax. As un-progressive as that would be, it would at least make those that are abusing the current tax system to pay what is right.

Democratic legislators should be out front fighting when tax fairness for all Americans is at issue, as well as to defend the Constitution.

According to a staffer of his with whom I spoke, however, Senator Kerry skipped the vote on the so-called “Protect America” Act on the grounds that his vote wouldn’t count.

Senator Dodd has just given the lie to any Senator who thinks that his voice and vote don’t count.

Senator Reid has agreed to FISA legislation that would absolve telecom companies for their illegal and unconstitutional spying on Americans from, I believe, even before 9/11.

Senator Dodd has now defended the Constitution by putting a hold on this FISA sellout. If the Senate fails to honor his hold, Senator Dodd has committed himself to filibustering it.

A single shot of courage can accomplish quite a bit. It’s pretty simple.
