So who needs the awards?

November 19, 2007 By David

A-Rod is the AL’s MVP.  Sabathia won the Cy Young.  And Eric Wedge is the AL “Manager of the Year.”

I’ll take what we got, thanks.  And I’m guessing so would Terry Francona, Josh Beckett, David Ortiz, and Mike Lowell.

You observe the same commonality of no WS rings on these three also?

1986 (let’s start with the tragic death of Len Bias on June 19th of that year) to 2002 were about the darkest period for Boston sports since I don’t know when.  Misery all around.  But, dammit, it hardened us.  Red Sox fans who had endured disappointment for decades no longer even had the Celtics or Bruins to fall back on.

Then the Patriots started winning Super Bowls, and after another epic tragedy in 2003, the Sox won in 2004.  And 2007.  Players actually want to come to and/or stay in Boston.  The Pats won two more Super Bowls and now are in the business in humiliating their peers.  The Celtics are clearly among the best in the NBA.

Is anyone else out there having a hard time with this?  I spent years convincing myself that fans of successful teams were shallow and weak.  And A-holes.

        Thank Goodness for the Bruins.

The Bruins are actually doing okay, with a record above .500 for the first time in a while.  But that’s tough when you’re playing in a city with this formula:

Nov. 19th  total NBA losses  total NFL losses

But what about the agony of the Revs going down?

Soccer is a game where you bash the ball with your head but aren’t allowed to touch it with your hands, and 2-0 is a blowout.  What would I care about that?

But preferable to say, basketball, where the scoring happens a hundred times per game, and defense is illegal.  (Sorry, only goaltending is illegal.)  There’s just not so much drama when the best thing you can do occurs on such a regular basis.

                p>
A goal in soccer is as dramatic as a home run in baseball.  It’s like saying in baseball, only homers count as runs (y’know, like the American League tends to try to play?)  Analogous basketball rules in baseball would be to score a run for each ball that makes it out of the infield, plus a run for every ball the pitcher throws.

The Revolution have been impressive in getting to the finals.  They’ve unfortunately become MLS’s Buffalo Bills (circa ’90-’93.)

Raj, you got my back?  I’ve been rooting for your hometown team (the Bundesliga’s equivalent to the Yankees) since ’88.  Go Bayern!
