Connecting Dem’s in Senator Timilty’s District. Anyone interested?

March 1, 2008 By medfieldbluebob

I don’t particularly like it when Democrats fight. Seen too much of it over the years.

We Dem’s in Senator Timilty’s district had one of the senate district conferences to elect a state committeewoman. Kate Donaghue did her usual great job, serving as the chair. We had two great candidates. Unfortunately, one had to lose.

But, sometimes there’s a positive side. The positive side is that we all got to meet each other and talk, both in the hall and beforehand for lunch. We usually only see each other up in the nosebleed section at state conventions, enviously looking down at the Suffolk and Middlesex delegations on the floor that can actually see and hear what’s going on. Standing on a flat surface made it way easier to talk.  đŸ™‚

I would like to follow up on Kate Donaghue’s suggestion that we use the event as the start of a collaboration and create a regional Democratic group. At least here on BlueMassGroup.

I know we’re a little spread out geographically. So, why don’t we start here at BMG, and then work out a nice place for lunch?

Thanks,

Bob Luttman

There are several regional groups of which I am aware and I’m sure their leaders would give you ideas.  For example, I am the secretary of Greater Lowell Area Democrats.  Kate is part of the Middlesex & Worcester Democratic Coaltion.  Chairman Walsh was active in the Plymouth County Democratic League.  Other groups I know include 3rd Middlesex Area Democrats (Sen. Fargo’s district), 1st Essex and Middlesex Coaltion (Sen. Tarr’s district), and the 1st Middlesex Area Democrats (Rep. Hargraves’ district).  Often the town and city chairs get things started so I would contact your counterparts in other communities in your district to see if there is interest.

      Christopher,

p>Thanks. I will contact my colleagues. Thought I’d start here first. Hoping, actually, that they are all on here.

      p>Cheers.

good idea.  The Mansfield Dem Town Committee is very active and I’d be happy to participate and spread the word among committee members.  Let me know how we can help with next steps.  David

Thanks David. I will follow up privately, but I am thinking lunch/coffee/??? somewhere in the middle (Mansfield looks good) with a person or two from each town and talk.

Bob, thanks for your kind words.

p>Regional groups are a great way for Democrats to get together.   Democratic Town, Ward and City Committees are the backbone of the Democratic Party.  If people have only the time to get involved in one effort, please focus your efforts on your local group.

    <

p>Having said that, regional groups are a great way to work together.  It can create a win-win situation for both candidates and activists.  Sometimes in smaller communities, the chair doesn’t want to invite a speaker for fear of a dismally small turnout and people don’t come to meetings because there are not speakers and no reason to attend.  It can create a downward spiral.

    <

p>A regional group can create the critical mass needed to bring statewide candidates into smaller communities.  Additionally, it gives the most active Democrats a chance to share information with each other and to see that they are not in it alone.

    <

p>To respond to Skipper’s question, Eliza Beringhause was elected at the conference.  I’m looking forward to working with her.

From Leslie. We’ll get her firing away on BMG, real soon now, but for the moment:

p>Hi Bob–Clare Kelly forwarded to me your email exchange on Bluemassgroup with David about connecting the Democrats Sen. Timilty’s district and getting together for district wide lunches, meetings and other activities. I think that’s a GREAT idea! Count me in. I am also forwarding this email to some of my friends in the district who I think would also be interested. Maybe we could start out by scheduling another Saturday lunch in a couple of weeks, perhaps at that same place in Medfield that some of us  went before . That might also be a helpful way for Eliza, Claire and Joe to report to us about some of the things that are going on at the state Democratic Committee.   I am afraid that I don’t know how to post a comment on Bluemassgroup, and couldn’t figure out how to do it . If you can copy this email and post it on Bluemassgroup please feel free to do so. Thanks, Bob to you and David for a great idea.

I am encouraged by the response, both here and emails I received. I will contact the state committee members and town chairs, plus the email respondents, after we all reorganize (we’re doing it next week) and plan a get together to discuss this.

I sent this as an email to folks who contacted me that way, so this may be redundant for some.

    <

p>I am thinking that lunch on the 29th somewhere in the middle – say Mansfield – with 1-2 people from each town, plus the DSC reps and (hopefully) someone from Sen. Timility’s office (I called and left a message with them today) to start this.

    <

p>Many ideas have been kicked around, meet/greet/eat will let us kick ’em around better, and more fun.

    <

    p>So …..

    <

p>each town email me a name or two, with an email address, of the people who can attend, by the 27th.

    <

p>we’ll get Mansfield working on a place to eat when we have some idea of attendance.

    <

    p>Thanks,

    <
