Notwithstanding the surface-deep maverick-like sensibilities that McCain and Palin supposedly share, McCain’s decision to choose Palin as a running mate is the exact opposite of a maverick decision. Just look at the timeline.
McCain very clearly only considered Palin at the eleventh hour, though he had been considering other people for months. His top choices — Lieberman and Ridge — were rejected by the conservative base. Palin satisfies the base. Hence the decision.
There is no amount of personality assessment that’s going to gloss over the fact that Sarah Palin was not John McCain’s first choice for a running mate.
