Out of Touch: Like husband like wife.

September 4, 2008 By cambridge_paul

One of the main tactics the McCain camp has been using is to try and paint Obama as an “elitist” who is out of touch.  This coming from a guy who can’t even remember how many houses he owns, who trots around in $520 Ferragamo loafers, and who defines being rich as making $5 million+.

Well, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

How much Paul? Did Obama’s $4.2Million income from 2007 count as rich? So… is BO rich? How much did Michelle Obama’s outfit (including jewelry) at the DNC cost?

      No where near this much.

The Obamas earned their money – Cindy “My Husband Cheated on His Disabled Wife to Marry Me” “Trustfund” McCain inherited hers.

      p>Just sayin’.

It’s a vast distinction and a huge plus for the Obamas since they can relate with working class citizens.  Plus, it was the McCain camp that made this an issue so let them reap what they sowed.

Boy this sounds familiar. That’s what BO like to do to. See, like you three Obama cannot answer tough questions. He’s runs and you can’t do that when you are the boss. You can do it when you’re a state or US Senator by not voting or voting “PRESENT” but when it’s your job to answer… you answer.

          <

p>McCain answered and is now paying for it but at least he answered vs. “…That’s above my pay grade…” and now you three have all skirted the question. Are you cowards?

… first to tell you he’s rich.  He’s also that rare breed of rich guy that know what it is to be poor.  It’s not a question of ‘isn’t he rich too?’.  It’s a question of being out of touch.  Only a McCain would out bling the first lady on stage.  Classy

        September 4, 2008 at 4:08 pm

But you still didn’t answer what rich is. Why not? Is it $1M, $200K, $3M… ? It’s a tough question and I can understand why you all run away from it. That’s very common on this site when I try to engage people on tough subjects. Normally I’m called a racist or a moron and people evade the actual question/issue.

        <

p>I would guess the vast majority of “rich” people (whatever that means) were poor too at some point. Sure, there are the Teddy Kennedy, John Kerry… rich people who never knew the meaning of poor like Sarah Palin, but I’ll bet most people doing well now had to scrap for every penny along the way. That’s the hunger that drives success.

        <

p>We’d compare Obama’s bling but I’m sure the left-wing media wouldn’t dare go there. Just like Obama’s kids on the stage is cute while Palin’s kids are “show boating”.

So according to him, the Obamas are middle class.

          what is rich, JohnD?

I would say anyone making more than me (or you) would be considered rich. Even those who make $20M/year may have scorn for those making $100M/year, and people making $15K/Year shiver at the idea of making $100K/year.

            <

p>I think the question being asked of McCain was probaly in line with being rich and payng taxes. It may be easier to delineate low, middle and high incomes. That is essentially where the discussion of what “rich” comes from.

            <

p>The other factor in defining “rich” would be assets. I have bemoaned about Obama’s $4.2Million last year but if I was being totally honest that was only 1 year. What do his assets look like? McCain only made $237K last year but what are his assets totaling?

            <

p>So “rich” is really more about your worth and with so many Americans sitting on house worth $500K-$2M, I’d say there a bunch of rich people. But again, maybe rich would be anyone who doesn’t have to work to survive.

            <

            p>So my answer …

            <

p>- according to assets (the real rich) Net worth of $4M (assuming 8% return in investments generating $320,000 to live.

            <

p>- according to income or “taxation” – I think anything above $550,000 would be a “rich”.

            <

p>And let’s stop being hypocrites… bemoaning trust fund babies since Democrats names could fill pages who have trust funds (Teddy…).

And not a penny less, according to McCain.  So Obama is middle class…as are most millionaires.

        You should check your facts.

        <

p>…when each was asked to define “rich.”

        <

p>McCain replied… “I think if you’re just talking about income, how about $5 million?”

        <

p>The Arizona Republican quickly added that he was “sure that comment will be distorted,” and his campaign said Sunday that he was joking.

        <

p>Your remark makes it sound like he thought long and hard and came up with $5M and isn’t backing down.

Wonder how much Michelle Obama spent on her Maria Pinto designer dress.  Looked like she was sporting some diamond earrings herself too.  I bet, they were expensive!

    <

p>News:  Wives of Presidents and Presidential candidates have lots of money.  Who knew.

    <

    p>Or,

    <

p>News: Wives of Presidents and Presidential candiates get ripped off bigtime. $280K for a pair of 3C earrings?  What’s the world coming to when you can’t pick up a 3C diamond for $40K or so. And seriously, they were 3C each ?  That’s pretty big for an earring; I’m thinking 3C in total.  I think Vanity Fair might have jumped shark on this piece. No bias there.
