Jeremy Jacobs is reporting that Dianne Wilkerson has resigned.
Senate President Therese Murray convened the Senate just afternoon noon on Tuesday and a letter from Wilkerson to Murray was read.
“Madam President, please accept this communication as formal notice of my intention to resign my position as the state senator of the 2nd Suffolk District…This resignation shall be effective today, Nov. 19, 2008.”

If Wilkerson had won the primary and then won the general and was slated to be sworn in again in January, then yes, there would be a special election.
But in this case she lost the primary and abandoned her write-in campaign, and Sonia Chiang-Diaz is waiting to take office. There’s only forty-one days left until she gets sworn in. Forty-one days wouldn’t be enough time for nomination papers to be circulated and the signatures certified, and then for an election to be held. Not to mention the cost that the City of Boston would have to bear for holding an election in late December for a seat that would be held by the victor for a matter of days.

Absolutely won’t happen, and ditto for Marzilli’s seat. Does the law allow for newly-elected members to take office early if their predecessor resigns after the election? It would make sense to me if they could.
