Obama May Nominate First Gay Navy Secretary

December 24, 2008 By Mr. Lynne

hat tip Ed Brayton.

Newsweek is is reporting:

… that the president-elect is considering the appointment of the first openly gay chief of a military branch.

Bill White, president of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York, is being backed by congressional and former military leaders to be the next secretary of the Navy. Among White’s vocal supporters are retired Gen. Hugh Shelton, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat whose district includes the newly renovated Intrepid museum which sits on an aircraft carrier in the Hudson River. Nadler says members of Obama’s transition team have reached out to him about White. “They’re clearly vetting him,” he tells NEWSWEEK.

Needless to say this will make any debate on the future of DADT much more interesting.

Apparently the rumor was first broken by the Moonie Times.  You know,… the paper that is, as Ed Brayton puts it…

…owned by a fascist cult leader who openly says that when he rules the world the gays will be “purged.”

Seems like the kind of thing they float to seem open-minded.

    p>But in real life?

    <

p>A guy who’s never served AND is gay?

p>I’d put it even with Sam Yoon’s chance of being next Boston mayor.

… but I do think this makes some strategic sense in that it provides an excellent debate point in the DADT argument that is sure to happen as soon as Obama can get around to it.

      <

p>It certainly is true that he’s only one name among (presumably) many being considered.

lately indicates that the congressional Democrats are refusing to take up DADT for another 2 years – and that’s with the blessing of Tammy, Barney and HRC. You know, too ‘controversial.’ We can’t let it ruin Obama’s first year, and we can’t vote on it during an election year. And, now, if we lose a few seats in congress next go around, we’ll need to strive more for that ‘moral center’ and continue to put off equality in favor of appeasing bigotry.

p>I’m so ready to start challenging some of these dodos in contested primaries.

If Moon’s people say it’s true, it probably is.

    <

p>The incoming commander-in-chief needs to make a bold step like this.  The younger officers and enlisted people don’t see the hang up.

    <

p>For that matter, many older vets don’t see it
    either.
