Canvass for Joe O’Brien for Mayor of Worcester this Saturday

September 17, 2009 By Jamie Eldridge

Please join me in canvassing for Joe O’Brien, candidate for Mayor of Worcester, this Saturday, September 19th.

I have known Joe since I was first elected to the Massachusetts Legislature in 2002.  He is a true progressive, and someone who has worked hard to help make a difference in people’s lives, whether in Worcester or across the Commonwealth.

I worked very closely with Joe in 2003 when he was director of Mass Voters for Clean Elections, trying to preserve public campaign financing in Massachusetts, and then in 2004 when he directed the Commonwealth Coalition, an umbrella organization of labor, environmental and social justice groups focused on electing progressive candidates in Massachusetts.  More recently, I’ve enjoyed working with Joe in his service as District Director of Congressman Jim McGovern, whose district overlaps part of the Senate district that I represent.

On a personal level, Joe is someone who I’ve always been able to depend upon, and I believe his dedication, strategic street smarts, and leadership on so many issues will serve the people of Worcester well, which I why I’m supporting him for Mayor of Worcester.

With a highly competitive election set for Tuesday, November 3rd, I hope you will join me this Saturday to canvass for Joe O’Brien for Mayor.  The campaign already has a great group of high school students from the Worcester County area who will be canvassing with us, and I hope even more volunteers will come to help out.

Both Joe and Jamie were active in politics beginning in their early teenage years.  Both of them have also given very young people strong leadership roles in their campaigns.  If you started as a political activist as a young person, or are a young person just starting out, please consider attending.  High School students are especially encouraged to take part.  We’d love to connect the people who have success stories, with people who are just getting involved.

Sorry, I can’t make it Saturday. Joe is just such a smart, classy guy. He is a pleasure to canvass for as he is such a well respected candidate and will make sure I make it out another time!

You would do better trying for election to the city council first. You can’t be mayor without being a city councullor.

O’Brien is running for City Council and Mayor…that’s the way it works in Worcester…people who want to be Mayor ALL run for City Council and declare their desire to be Mayor. Quirky system, but they like it.

      <

p>PS…Joe O’Brien would be a great mayor….he knows how to bring people together to get something accomplished.  The current mayor has not proven to have that ability and city government is mired in bickering and backbiting politics.  Worcester deserves better.

Does the highest vote-getter for Council automatically become the Mayor?  Also does the Mayor have powers and duties beyond being the Chair of Council?

Candidates for At-Large City Council can also declare as candidate for Mayor.  So a voter would need to vote for Jow twice: once for City Council and once for Mayor.  I can’t speak to if there is anything beyond City Council Chair for official powers and responsibilities, but we have seen Tim Murray as an example of a Mayor who used the office to move the city forward.

All candidates for city council are entered in the mayoral race unless they declare otherwise. The winner of the mayoral race must also win election as a city councillor.
It is possible to win election as mayor and not be able to serve as mayor if said person failed to win election to the city council.

Joe is a terrific candidate.  He’s hugely popular and has a lot of support not only around Worcester but around it as well.  Worcester is lucky to have him.

What lightiris said.  He’s just what Worcester needs.

Ask Joe about when he started a CYC basketball team “for the kids”. Three of what could have been his best players were playing at a neighboring parish with their friends since their parish had no team. Joe decided they should now play for him and instantly give him a winning team. They refused, and couldn’t play for anyone. Yeah, tell me again how that dipshit O’Brien is youth oriented.
