Ed O’Reilly “seriously considering” run for US Senate

September 4, 2009 By Christopher

I’ve received the following email:

I need your help and appreciate your thoughts!

As you may be aware, I am seriously considering entering the U.S. Senate race.

Although this special election may be quite different from last year’s Democratic Primary, I am the only potential Democratic candidate who has run for the U.S. Senate.

A year ago, more than 160,000 Massachusetts Democrats (31%), from all across this state, voted for change!

We stood for ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, insuring quality and affordable health care for all Americans through a Single Payer System, speaking loudly for the full repeal of DOMA and protecting civil liberties, promoting locally controlled renewable energy projects, and giving working people an equal voice in Washington by limiting the influence of special interests.

I will be making my decision by Thursday, September 10th and your opinions and thoughts are important to me.  If you could take a little time and write to ed@edoreilly.com, I would definitely appreciate your thoughts and comments.

Thank you and I wish you and your loved ones a very Happy Labor Day!

Ed

    … way before Obama was elected, let alone started his push for health care reform. If Ed had beaten Kerry, there would now be one strong voice in the US Senate in favor of single payer; Obama and the single payer people in the House would have some help dealing with Baucus and other lame Senate Dems.

    p>If Ed decides to run, he can make that pitch again. This time around, we know we need someone to take up what Kennedy left undone.

    His positions were all over the map last time, as if he was hoping to cobble together enough support from disparate groups, each of whom would only hear the message tailored for it and not the others, saying whatever he thought would work for a particular audience (including a collegial appearance on Howie Carr’s radio show, if I recall).  Having been pretty much exposed as a fraud last time, I can only imagine he’s banking on short memories and his resemblance to Joe Kennedy (I’m just not sure how that works in the voting booth, but it would make a funny primary debate).

    p>Last time:  “Dump John Kerry”

    <

    p>This time:  “Send me to D.C. as John Kerry’s partner”

    <

    p>Running against (and ostensibly to the left of) Kerry, his major accomplishment was to create a lot of nastiness among otherwise reasonable Democrats — which would be nice to avoid this time — but at least discontent with Kerry was a raison d’etre for his campaign, and that masked his lack of credentials or experience.  This time he automatically enters the race as the weakest candidate; I can’t see any good coming from it.

      The Kerry as windsurfer meme was bad enough the first time around.  Ed’s reusing it cemented my feeling that he’s not someone I want in office.

      …read the MA Democratic platform.  He prided himself in his views lining up with the platform even before he had read the platform.

    Well, I’ll prepare myself to get annoyed for getting screamed at for a solid hour every time he has a microphone.  I’ll also eagerly await some evidence that he has anything, anything at all, to bring to the table.  Perhaps even something like a coherent vision that doesn’t include hating John Kerry.  I won’t hold my breath, though.  He’s a gadfly.  Get the swatter.

      Gadflys do serve their purpose.  They help keep other-wise restful and way-too-comfie pols from complete calcification.

      … I am concerned about the process by which our tax dollars go through Washington to fund education on the local level. The farther we move educational planning and policy away from classroom teachers, the less the positive impact upon students. We don’t need unfunded mandates and edicts from Washington to our local schools…

      No Child Left Behind: Too Little Funding; Too Many Subjects Left Behind

      The “No Child Left Behind Act of 2001” made sweeping changes to American public education. I wholeheartedly support high academic and vocational education standards for the public schools and for teacher development, but I believe “No Child Left Behind” endangers fundamental aspects of a proper education for a free and democratic society. Paradoxically, under “No Child Left Behind,” our children are less prepared for the world in which they are growing up and in which they will work.

      p>

      Energy Independence: Renew America
      Ed has a bold new vision for America-it is a vision of energy independence based upon community initiated and locally controlled renewable energy projects.
      The centerpiece of Ed’s energy program is his “RENEW AMERICA” proposal. “Renew America” is all about creating local jobs, promoting a “green” economy, and ending our reliance on fossil fuels in general, and foreign oil in particular. “Renew America” is based upon community initiated renewable energy projects and revolutionizes the basic economic model so that renewable energy profits are reinvested in our local communities for education, public safety and basic infrastructure rather than going to Wall Street investors for profit. It is helping to take back America.

      p>On Health Insurance Reform

      <

      p>

      Ed O’Reilly believes every American should have access to affordable, quality healthcare.

      ~~~~
      He stands by the principles and policies of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, which is committed to a single-payer healthcare system.
      Now that single payer is off the table, I am not sure where Ed O’reilly stands on a Public Option, the so-called trigger or any other reform proposals.
      <
      p>Disclosure
      I was a volunteer for the Ed O’reilly campaign for US Senate last year.  I’ve met Ed a few times, and correspond with him occasionally via email.  I took this information off of his website last year to create flyers
      for his visit to our town and to create handouts to inform local voters who might otherwise be unaware of his candidacy.
      This information is no longer available on EdOreilly.com
