Ed O’reilly will not be Candidate for U.S. Senate

September 10, 2009 By liveandletlive

from Ed O’reilly’s email to supporters…

I will not be a Candidate for U.S. Senate

After careful deliberation and honest personal reflection, I have decided NOT to seek election to the United States Senate in the upcoming Massachusetts special election.

Since last September’s Democratic Primary Challenge to Senator Kerry, I have returned to my criminal defense law practice.  Nearly thirty years ago, I took an oath to represent my clients zealously AND to the best of my ability.   While I contemplated my candidacy, it became apparent that I could not uphold my oath as an attorney and also run in a statewide election, at this time.

I want to thank the hundreds of people who have offered their ideas and support over the last several days.  Your kindness and thoughtfulness has been heartfelt.

Thank you!

Ed

I feel that there is quite a menu of choices befitting our electorate already, unlike last year.  That said, I hope O’Reilly remains involved.  For instance, if Deval were to move on, Tim Murray to take over, I think he’d make a great lieutenant governor.

I think it’s important to have voices in government that are innovative and that come from outside of the government vacuum.

Maybe Ed O’Reilly can be the anti-Deval choice for progressive this primary season?
