Robust Public Option count in the House

October 2, 2009 By soffner

The daily kos (dailykos.com) today is reporting that the House progressive leaders are counting how many members will support the strongest version of the public option – one tied to Medicare rates plus five percent.  This kind of option is our best hope for giving the insurance companies serious competition.

They have 170 firm supporters.  The bill would need 218 votes to pass.

I called Niki Tsongas’ office today and asked if she was one of the 170 firm supporters.  Her office was completely clueless and would not commit her to any position until a specific bill was up to be voted on.

This is the vote that will define our generation.  For a representative from Massachusetts to not have a firm position in support of such a moderate compromise – it is not single-payer, not an opt-in to Medicare for anyone who wants it – is terribly wrong.

I urge everyone to call their representative and make sure that they are among the 170 supporters and, if not, to add their names to this important list.  The congressional switchboard phone number is 202-224-3121.  Just ask to be connected to your representative’s office.  And, please, post your results to Blue Mass Group so we know where the Massachusetts congressional delegation stands.
