I come to praise the man. Seriously. Really. No irony. Not leading up to a gag. Just credit where credit is due. Not taking anything away from Tommy O’Neill.
Let’s review the facts. Including the part about the dead body and the mysterious circumstances surrounding its cause.
Did You Say Dead Body?
Yes. Here on the Orient Heights Express there is always a dead body.
Sit down Mr. Chan. You too Dr. Holmes. Mark, please wheel Chief Ironside closer so he can hear us. Fish, what the hell are you doing here? Oh, you and Bernice going to the track. Cool. How did all those foster kids of yours’ turn out? Okay, I won’t.
Okay, here’s what we know.
One of Regan’s biggest clients is the Boston Herald. Boston Herald was sued this week for stuff the Inside Track ggals wrote awhile back. (Thanks to Dan Kennedy for link to the complaint)
Basically they said that the main main guy from the band Boston, Tom Scholz, was such a dick that he did everything he could to make another guy from Boston kill himself. Or something like that. Their source was the widow. Or so they said. (Note:they didn’t say that exactly. It’s a joke, so don’t sue me)
Not so says the widow. Tom Scholz is suing them and he’s is represented by the same lawyer, Howard Cooper, that kicked the Herald’s ass in the libel suit against Dave Wedge.
Scholz’s complaint alleges all sorts of shitty moves by the Herald and drags George Regan and his firm into this. I’ve called the Inside Track a wholly owned subsidiary of Regan Communications before. With interrogatories and depositions, this suit could reveal all. The suit alleges that one of Regan’s people cahooted with the Inside Track gals to run with this untrue story. And they did.
This is a national story and can expose the Herald to huge damages. And the second hit like this is a major blow to their brand. As the National Enquirer gains respectability credibility the Herald is being proven in courts of law as committing libel. Not good.
And in the long run the role of Regan’s firm in this can be bad news. The more he keeps it off the radar the better it is for the client (Boston Herald) and for him.
Sooo. Right now, two days after the Herald bomb, the biggest law suit in Boston is this spat between the co-captains of the public relations football team. Law suits can be filed at any time. Or not filed at all. For George Regan, public relations, image, and clients are priority number one. Same for Tommy O
If anything it solidifies the perception of the two being the oligarchy in this town. The two power houses going nose to nose over and over again. Great for the legend. Great for p.r.
O’Neillknows what’s going on. He may even like it. He’ll know what to do.
This, in my opinion, is a total defensive move in response to the libel suit brought this week against the Herald. Because of this ladies and gentlemen I believe there is no other conclusion then George Regan is one smart bastard. All agree? Fine, it’s unanimous then.
We will send a letter to Pat Purcell telling him that whatever amount of money he is paying George Regan it is not enough.
Next order of business, why is Jim Braude on the radio and Pete Shepard is not?
Note from Ernie: I purposely did not call Regan “Half Man” in this post because this is a day of respect for him. But I have not forgotten that he wanted to promote a client (Ernie Boch, Jr) by hiring a private detective to find out my true identity and have Howie Carr and WRKO, with whom he has had business relationships in the past, use their FCC licensed radio station to, as Ernie Boch, Jr. said “terrorize me every afternoon.” This being the season of Saint Patrick and in true Irish form, I should say “I haven’t forgotten”. But today is George’s day. So I won’t
