Governors Councillor, Sixth District?

September 4, 2010 By cos

I’ve got opinions on the Treasure race and the Auditor race, but I just noticed we’ve got two candidates for Democratic nominee for Governor’s Councillor in the Sixth District, and I know absolutely nothing about either of them.  I also haven’t seen them mentioned on Blue Mass Group, so I just did a search and found nothing about this race.

The Governor’s Council approves judicial appointments, as well as giving approval or oversight on a few other things such as pardons and notaries public.

The Sixth District [PDF map] covers a bit of downtown and Allston, most of Cambridge, and then a bunch of cities and towns to the north including Somerville, Medford, Malden, Chelsea, Revere… up to Reading and Billerica.

It’s the seat currently held by Michael Callahan, known to many of us from Blue Mass Group’s first high profile race, the 2005 State Senate special election.  He’s one of three councillors retiring this year.

The candidates are:

Suzanne R. English-Merullo, 31 Clark St., Winchester

Terrence W. Kennedy, 3 Stafford Rd., Lynnfield

What do you know about them?

Wanna advocate for or against either?

Edit: Verdict so far: Nobody here seems to know anything about them either, but people have seen evidence of Kennedy campaigning, and none of English-Merullo.

To hear him tell it the other Democrat isn’t really putting in the effort to campaign.  Kennedy also mentioned he was part of a law suit that resulted in the creation of the Mass. School of Law.

      English-Merullo’s Facebook has this message:

In the near future I will be notifying you of my announcement date to formally kick off our campaign as your Governors Councilor in the 6th District. This campaign will only be successful with the help of people like you! Within the next week we will be launching a website and sign up volunteer forms

      <

p>The primary is 9 days away and you will kick off your campaign “in the near future”???

      <

p>It had the same message when I looked at the page a few weeks ago as well.

I remember hearing something about a guy named Goselin from Winchester who was going to run as well.  I looked on OCPF a few months ago and his campaign had something around $100,000 in it, mostly a loan, but still a large sum.  Did he drop out, not get enough signatures, etc.?

      <

p>Seems like Kennedy has the primary sewn up.  His signs are everywhere while the other candidate seems to be applying the Galvin approach, stay silent which may work for a long-term incumbent but not for an unknown challenger.

p>The only significant political presence I see in Eastie  favors Glodis or English-Merullo, with a sprinkling of Murphy.

I’m a long time lurker, just thought I’d finally register to comment simply because I’ve known Terry for years.

    <

p>He is a criminal defense attorney who has handled several high profile cases in MA over the years.

    <

p>He is also a good democrat.

    <

p>I first got to know him when I was an Assistant DA.

    <

p>He is known around the Suffolk/Middlesex county courts for his affable nature, sharp intellect, and relentless dedication to his clients.

    <

p>I don’t anything about his opponent, but Terry is definitely worth voting for.

p>Check out his facebook page here:
