I have been following the Russian Press somewhat, and Fyodor Lukyanov is one of their better columnists. His point seems to be that with US/Pakistani relations frosty, Pakistan is hedging its bets, and Moscow is also concerned about instability on their doorstep.
I can see where Ali Zardari would want friends.

Russian diplomacy is and will be as ineffective as ours. All this kind of analysis proves is that Russia is, indeed, a westernized country and not the unfathomable sphinx of the east, as so often portrayed by many scholars and journalists.
