The Democratic State Convention is today in Lowell. Heard Lt. Gov. Murray stole the show and knocked it out of the park…Is the Dem. State Committee putting up the video of the speeches? I would like to see that one. (Kate Donoghue must have the answer to this question)

I am a big fan of Tim Murray’s – our next governor. However I thought the outstanding speech came from Bob Massie. I had no idea who he was but came away thinking that he is a real possibility.

Say, an unexpectedly strong showing of sign holders for someone not yet running for Senate?

But, anyway, I am supporting Bob Massie for US Senate, and have been since he declared because I do know who he is.
Bob Massie had the whole convention on its feet – and I do hope the speech becomes available to embed.
Tim Murray gave the most passionate speech and I think, best I have heard him give – for me, the speechs by Massie & Tim Murray were the absolute gems and highlights of this convention.
Bob Massie’s website keeps evolving, but there is a lot of information about him on it and I am hoping the speech will be available there, though it was not the last time I checked: http://www.bobmassie.org/

He is the most qualified candidate, with a strong background in government (5 years as a state representative, worked for two U.S. Senators: Gary Hart and Barbara Mikulski), in nonprofits (managed programs in Thailand and Haiti), and in private industry.
He defeated an entrenched Republican to capture a seat that was held by Republicans for decades. He is one of only two Senate candidates who have run and won elective office.
As a state rep, he has been a leader. He wrote a cost-benefit analysis that showed the casinos will not deliver their promised benefits. He serves as vice chair of a committee on health care costs.
See his website at http://www.tomconroy.org/.

Walking in to the convention today, I didn’t have a candidate. I still don’t. But if you were to ask me who I’m the slightest bit leaning towards, it’s Tom Conroy.
At the very least, can you imagine Sen. Brown debating someone with a degree in economics?

There were several good speeches. The one that really blew me away, however, was Gov. Patrick — he really had the crowd listening to his speech about values.

Talk is one thing – actions are quite another. Between the direct attack on the judicical branch, disrespect for the 6th Amendment Bar as if adding 1500 state employees is a way to save money while eliminating at least 1700 private jobs, closure of Fernald without an independent cost benefit study, support for the gambling industry without an independent cost benefit study, elimination of supports for children in foster care and struggling families, I do not see Deval Patricks values in his actions as reflecting what he says in his rousing speechs. I first heard Deval Patrick give a rousing speech in 2005 – in 2005 I believed he meant what he said. I no longer do. He can certainly talk the talk, but I have not seen him walk the walk where foster care, access to justice, and the disabled are concerned. I am less and less impressed as time goes on.

Sorry that I have been MIA.
1) I don’t know on the posting of speeches. I will find out.
2) I had a great time at the Convention.
3) I’m still getting used to the new platform.

1. I would have insisted that there be recycling recepticles in Tsongas, one next to every single trash can. There were none to be found. Shame on the Dem subcommittee in charge of facilities.
2. I would have had somebody (John Walsh?) spend 20 minutes before the Senate candidates absolutely dragging Scott Brown through the mud.
3. I would have cut down on the speeches in the beginning and given each of the (7?!) Senate candidates more time. 7 minutes, 8 minutes, 10 minutes, whatever I could squeeze. Mass Dems choosing our next Senate candidate is our most important mission between now and Sep 2012. Oh, and I would have told all the candidates about #2, encouraging them to spend all 7/8/10 minutes telling the convention goers about themselves instead of Scott Brown.
I really feel like the MA Dems need to make this less about stodgy old formalities and more dynamic, flexible, and about our future missions — we’ve got to choose a Senate candidate, we’ve got to get ourselves prepared and trained for 2012 elections, and we’ve got to raise money.

I’m still very much undecided (despite Amberpaw’s endorsement of Massie), but I wasn’t really blown away by much of anything. Maybe the conventional wisdom – heh – is that you don’t really need to introduce yourself much at these things. But it sounded too often that everyone was trying to tell me how much they want to beat Scott Brown, and not why or even how.
