I’m not sure if this is making much of a media impression in Boston, but several towns in Western Mass and Southern Vermont have been totally devastated by the flooding from Hurricane Irene. The towns of Shelburne Falls and Charlemont along the Deerfield River appear to be particularly hard hit. In Vermont, Downtown Wilmington has been destroyed and parts of Brattleboro are underwater. Here in North Adams, the damage is minor in comparison, but we, and the neighboring towns of Adams and Williamstown, have had roads washed out and several homes destroyed. The water is still rising.

It was only in the last week that Governor Patrick announced that he was putting $300 million back into the Rainy Day Fund. Well, today it rained, and rained, and ….Shelburne Falls is washing away
