Newt: Child Labor Laws ‘truly stupid’

November 20, 2011 By tblade

A CNN.com article describes Newt Gingrich’s new plan to curtail poverty: put children to work:

“It is tragic what we do in the poorest neighborhoods, entrapping children in child laws which are truly stupid,” Gingrich said. “Saying to people you shouldn’t go to work before you’re 14, 16. You’re totally poor, you’re in a school that’s failing with a teacher that’s failing.”

Gingrich then proposed a system he said would help those students rise from poverty.

“I tried for years to have a very simple model. These schools should get rid of unionized janitors, have one master janitor, pay local students to take care of the school. The kids would actually do work; they’d have cash; they’d have pride in the schools. They’d begin the process of rising.”

So the answer to ending poverty is to lay off janitors and make the janitors’ kids clean the school for lower wages? Is this the GOP’s version of a jobs plan?

Hey, Newt: how about a jobs plan that doesn’t eliminate jobs for one group of adults yet creates jobs for the group of adults that do need to work?

Didn’t he propose reintroducing orphanages when he was Speaker?

Two of my grandparents spent part of their childhoods in an orphanage – it created a rift in my family which still hasn’t healed to this day. Screw you Newt — he did get mic-checked though, right?

If we get rid of adult janitors, then these kids will be learning a job that when they graduate from high school, they will be too old to qualify for.

Why doesn’t Newt jut propose expensive public school education altogether? Then we’ll need no janitors – adult or kid – and we can put this poverty stricken urchins to work as domestic servants in our homes. This would also solve the embarrassing issue in recent years of anti-immigration republicans hiring undocumented workers! #epicwin

    And debtors prisons.

    Lots of them.

Chanting “Shame, shame, shame” at Newt would be a complete waste of breath.
