One year after superstorm Sandy became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, Super Typhoon Haiyan just became the strongest landfalling tropical cyclone on record, hitting the Philippines with sustained winds of 190-195mph and gusts to 235mph. That’s as strong as a top-of-the-scale EF-5 tornado … except Haiyan’s eye is eight miles wide.
Why is the storm so historically strong? NOAA blames warm deep water. When climate science deniers claim a global warming “pause,” the heat isn’t missing – it’s right there lurking in the ocean, waiting to put super typhoons on steroids.
Better burn all the coal and oil while we still can.

Anyone get a chance to watch CNN program on nuclear power? Basically, if you are serious in trying to stabilize the climate, the only way to go is to build nuclear power plants. The worlds energy consumption is going to double by 2050, triple by 2100. Solar and wind have a problem with scaling, wind being the biggest waste of space according to the article.
Perhaps some here know better than the experts CNN spoke with. Interesting, the entire waste from US nuclear plants would fill just a football field, three feet high. There are 4 new plants being built in GA, TN, and SC. Our next governor needs to reach out to Entergy, and say “how can we help you build a new Pilgrim II”. Otherwise, according to the experts, you are not really serious about climate change.

Wind turbines should be called “bird killing guillotines” .

For the record, Dan is just as foolishly wrong here as always.
The reality is that wind turbines kill about one tenth of 1% of all birds that die of unnatural causes.
Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of birds a year are killed by feral and domesticated cats. Hundreds of millions are killed by power lines. Hundreds of millions fly in to windows. About 70 million are killed by pesticides used in farming. All while, by even the most inflated estimates by the biggest climate deniers, fewer than 1 million birds are killed by wind turbines. For, you know, actual statistics and information on this, see: http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/green-science/wind-turbine-kill-birds.htm

Folks, Id like to sing a song about the American Dream
About me, about you
About the way our American hearts beat way down in the bottom of our chests
About that special feeling we get in the cockles of our hearts
Maybe below the cockles,
Maybe in the sub cockle area,
Maybe in the liver, maybe in the kidneys,
Maybe even in the colon, we dont know
Im just a regular Joe, with a regular job
Im your average white, suburbanite slob
I like football and porno and books about war
I got an average house, with a nice hardwood floor
My wife and my job, my kids and my car
My feet on my table, and a Cuban cigar
But sometimes that just aint enough to keep a man like me interested
(oh no, no way, uh uh)
No I gotta go out and have fun at someone elses expense
(woah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah)
I drive really slow in the ultra fast lane
While people behind me are going insane
Im an asshole (hes an asshole, what an asshole)
Im an asshole (hes an asshole, such an asshole)
I use public toilets and I piss on the seat
I walk around in the summer time saying “how about this heat?”
Im an asshole (hes an asshole, what an asshole)
Im an asshole (hes the worlds biggest asshole)
Sometimes I park in handicapped spaces
While handicapped people make handicapped faces
Im an asshole (hes an asshole, what an asshole)
Im an asshole (hes a real fucking asshole)
Maybe I shouldnt be singing this song
Ranting and raving and carrying on
Maybe theyre right when they tell me Im wrong
Nah
Im an asshole (hes an asshole, what an asshole)
Im an asshole (hes the worlds biggest asshole)
You know what Im gonna do
Im gonna get myself a 1967 Cadillac Eldorado convertible
Hot pink, with whale skin hubcaps
And all leather cow interior
And make brown baby seal eyes for head lights (yeah)
And Im gonna drive in that baby at 115 miles per hour
Gettin’ 1 mile per gallon,
Sucking down Quarter Pounder cheeseburgers from McDonalds
In the old fashioned non-biodegradable styrofoam containers
And when Im done sucking down those greeseball burgers
Im gonna wipe my mouth with the American flag
And then Im gonna toss the styrofoam containers right out the side
And there aint a goddamn thing anybody can do about it
You know why, because weve got the bombs, thats why
2 words, nuclear fucking weapons, OK?
Russia, Germany, Romania, they can have all the democracy they want
They can have a big democracy cakewalk
Right through the middle of Tiananmen Square
and it wont make a lick of difference
Because weve got the bombs, OK?
John Wayne’s not dead, hes frozen, and as soon as we find a cure for cancer
Were gonna thaw out the duke and hes gonna be pretty pissed off
You know why,
Have you ever taken a cold shower, well multiply that by 15 million times
Thats how pissed off the dukes gonna be!
I’m gonna get the Duke, and John Cassavetes,
and Lee Marvin, and Sam Peckinpah, and a case of whiskey,
and drive down to Texas and say…..
(Hey! You know, you really are an asshole!)
Why don’t you just shut up and sing the song, pal?
Im an asshole (hes an asshole, what an asshole)
Im an asshole (hes the worlds biggest asshole)

Thank God my fiancées family lives in the Northwest of Luzon on the leeward side of the mountains. Thank God it didn’t hit Manilia which would’ve endured six digit casualties. It’s already bad enough the way it hit. Income inequality and lack of infrastructure will make the situation extremely worse. America has a moral obligation as a former imperial overlord of the Philippines to provide any humanitarian assistance requested of us. I am heartened that Sec. Kerry and the general in charge of the Philippines Military Group understand that.
Whether its this, the tsunami, or Sandy and Katrina-the poor of the world who bare the least responsibility for climate change bare the brunt of its consequences. I’m offended too many people take this fact for granted and do too little to stop it.

As the average global temperature rises 2 degrees Centigrade above the previous average, we will expect to see widespread desertification. A number of aquifers in the middle of our country may not even make it to end of the decade. So the middles of continents are becoming less and less habitable.
If the coasts of continents start regularly falling prey to hurricanes with 190 mph winds, then there’s going to be a lot less habitable land than formerly. As the oceans continue to heat, doesn’t this become a real possibility?

coal to keep us warm.
Global warming denial is holocaust denial without the anti-semitism.
kbusch says
I’m not sure I’m comfortable comparing global warming denial to the holocaust though as the latter is keenly personal and tragic for too many people.
jconway says
This is a real terrible human tragedy, one that is entirely our fault and preventable, but something entirely different. It’s not fair to either party to compare the situations. Fortunately my fiancees family was spared, but we know people who know people that are missing. Finding them, burying the dead, and trying to rebuild is going to take so many years and effort. The best thing we can do is donate to direct aid providers. And yes it can and should be used to make the policy arguments we need to have to fight climate change.
